Almost 4 in 10 Dutch people have been confronted with bank card or credit card fraud in the past 2 years, according to a survey by the Geldgids of the Consumers' Association. In more than a third of these, money has actually been stolen or there has been an attempt to do so.

The union advises consumers not to accept it immediately if a bank does not reimburse the damage.

Investigation

In the case of almost 30% of the victims with damage, the bank did not compensate or only partially compensated. Almost 13% of those who asked for compensation are completely dissatisfied with the claims handling. This is shown by a representative survey of the Geldgids among 1000 consumers. Many of them felt that the bank was treating them as guilty rather than victims. In 9 out of 10 victims, the damage amounted to less than €1000. The most common forms of fraud are phishing (18%) and criminals trying to get consumers to send their debit cards (14%). The Geldgids of June 2016 lists the most common criminal tricks and how to prevent them.

Negligent

If a debit card or credit card is stolen, it is important to report this immediately to the bank and to block the card or have it blocked. With credit cards it depends on the provider whether there is an excess, with debit cards it is a maximum of €150. The bank reimburses the rest if the account holder has complied with the uniform security rules. One in 5 Dutch people is not aware of these rules. Banks that refuse to pay damages must be able to prove that the card holder was 'grossly negligent'.

Just like that “out of the blue” 2 amounts were suddenly debited from my Mastercard, 1 of 1000 and 1 of 500 euros from a location in Cyprus where I have never been in my life. I discovered this at 00:30 at night but decided to ring the bell immediately despite the time.

I also immediately got someone on line who reacted very alertly, I can see it already ma'am, you have been to Thailand about six months ago? I confirmed that and was immediately told not to worry! That same day the amount was credited again and 3 days later my new card was in the bus.

All credit to Marstercard, the credit card I have at ING.

Try reclaiming your money from a Thai bank. I couldn't do that after my bank card from the Bangkok Bank was skimmed. Money gone. ABN-AMRO was much more considerate when my credit card was misused. Money was properly refunded.

However, a relative of mine got her money back in Puhket. Admittedly after a year, but still.

I got a call from ING in the middle of last year – someone had made a payment with my credit card details (Mastercard). It was a relatively small amount, around 150 euros, but the bank's computer systems apparently saw a deviation from my normal 'pattern' and an employee called me before the debit had actually taken place to check whether I had made the payment myself. done. All credit to the bank!

I received a call from VISA at about 23:30 pm: money had been withdrawn with my card in London, and a few minutes later an attempt was made in Romania. You must have gone from airport to airport in a hurry with an aircraft at the speed of sound. And that was why the last one was blocked for a while. I could immediately declare that I was still in NL, so.. in Bucharest the police were put on the case. Didn't cost me a penny. Applause for the smooth operation of Visa.

I too have only had good experiences with my ING master card. Pro active fraud detection and if things go wrong, they don't make a fuss and the money is back in no time. I travel a lot and do a lot of shopping online. Then the risk is a bit higher. But as it is now, nothing but praise for the ING mastercard

Also good experiences at ING wanted to make a large payment with our credit card. This was refused contact by phone with ING and after verification I was still able to make the payment. they had blocked a good thing as a precaution. Furthermore, I ignore all emails that supposedly ask for payment, forward this to the bank and return an email. Recently a threatening e-mail from KPN was also immediately blocked so pay attention everyone. And after paying out the machine for money warm up all the keys Then infrared has no chance.

That is why I still wonder how fast Thai banks are with paying back at your ATM only after a fraud.
Maybe I still have old-fashioned thinking.
That's why I never have much cash in my house here in Thailand.
On my ATM card I usually have a maximum of around 20000 THB per week.
If this drops again to say 3000 Thb every week, then I will transfer from one of my other, not directly linked accounts back to my savings account with the ATM card.
If they ever skim me , the preliminary damage will be somewhere in between .

A few years ago I was at the river kwai, had a delicious meal there with my wife and some family members.
Paid with my credit card, no problem.
Later when we were back in Bangkok I wanted to pay again with my credit card, this was not possible????
Why not I didn't know, but paid in cash.
When I was back in the Netherlands, there was a letter in the mailbox from the Rabobank if I would please contact them.
That's what I was planning to do anyway because my credit card no longer works in Thailand.
They had blocked my credit card for the reason that a few minutes after I had used the credit card in Thailand, someone in America also tried to use my credit card, which Rabobank found very suspicious.
I say thank you at this Rabobank.

With my debit card from Kasikorn Bank I wanted to withdraw 4 Bath at an ATM of the Bangkok Bank on Phuket 10.000 years ago. No money came out of the machine, but later it turned out that 10.000 Bath had been debited from my account. Contacted my Kasikorn Bank by phone. I spoke neatly in English, it would be sorted out and after exactly one week the money was refunded to my Thai account. And about 1 year ago, my ING credit card, which I had only used in Thailand, suddenly had 10 payments debited due to purchases at I-Tunes in Luxembourg. Total about € 400, =. After contact with ING, these amounts were also refunded. I found it strange that these fraudulent purchases had taken place long after I had returned to the Netherlands and that the fraud had been limited to € 400.=. I try to limit payments with my credit card in Thailand as much as possible, in restaurants I still only pay cash, but for example when checking into hotels you cannot avoid using your credit card.

A week after I returned to Belgium from Thailand, money was withdrawn from my credit card account in Thailand.
We went to a Thai restaurant in Belgium a few days earlier to celebrate our return to Belgium.
What turned out? We had paid the restaurant with our credit card, and…. the Thai wife of the owner had traveled to BKK as usual and used our data to collect money.
Afterwards we learned that she had a gambling addiction.
Everything was neatly refunded by Master card.
To be clear: THIS Thai restaurant no longer exists in Bruges.

Second occurrence, but a long time ago:
I buy in Silom rd. in BKK some works of art, and pay with the former “press payment”, where you have to give your card and then sign. The document is then validated as if with an ironing movement.
The seller moved away behind a cardboard wall in the store.
I clearly heard that he used the device with a stroke 2 times.
When I told him that the copies had to be returned or that I would call the tourist police, he returned them, apologizing for not entering the amount correctly. OK, problem was solved in peace, but still pay attention.

We also have no bad experiences with ING Mastercard. They themselves had blocked the card after suspicious payments were made from America. Finally got everything back after 2 months.
Indeed. it is better not to put too much money on a debit card account. Neither in Europe nor in Thailand.
This is of course different with a credit card.

We ourselves have also had problems once in Bali.
paid in a restaurant. and 2 days later debited a hotel bill from the same owner, although we had not slept there. We could even prove that we rented a villa for 3 months and did not book any hotel in Bali
