Thirty percent of the world's population is overweight or obese. At least 2,2 billion adults and children have health problems because they are overweight. That is twice as many as in 1980, writes the ONGOING.

These conclusions come from a global research project, the results of which have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The authors of the study speak of a serious global health crisis with no end in sight.

Among the 2,2 billion people who are overweight, 600 million adults and 108 million children have a BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30, meaning they are seriously overweight.

According to the researchers, more and more people are dying from the consequences of being overweight. If you are overweight, you are much more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

The study spanned 195 countries and regions between 1980 and 2015. The researchers analyzed the relationship between obesity and health in 68,5 million people. The researchers made use of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015. This is a large global health study in which more than 2000 scientists in 133 countries collaborated.

Obesity is also an increasing problem in Thailand. Earlier studies show that Thailand even ranks second in the ranking of ASEAN countries with the most overweight population. Bangkokians are at the highest risk of becoming overweight. The northeast region (Isaan) has the lowest risk of obesity. There appears to be a causal relationship between receiving a higher salary and poor eating habits in the capital compared to those living in rural areas.

Malaysia has the highest obesity rate of all ASEAN countries.

I see this problem increasing enormously in the coming years. Here in Thailand to some extent, even more so in the Western world, with the USA leading the way.

Potatoes and bread are THE 2 biggest causes of obesity. In combination with TOO easy access to food and TOO little exercise.
Especially in the cities, you can buy a quick bite on every corner of the street, where potatoes and/or bread predominate.
In addition, more and more work, again especially in the cities, is sedentary. Even transport to and from work is seated.
Obesity could very well become the new 'disease' that will finally shrink the world's population. It can hardly be combated and certainly not cured with medication.
In this way, nature will still regulate itself again, despite the fact that man has been trying to prevent this for centuries.
We humans are becoming far too numerous for this small planet. Nature has been trying to inhibit this with diseases for centuries. We have always been able to stop that by inventing medicines.
Fortunately, we are also part of that nature and the amount of people will be regulated by ourselves. By eating ourselves to pieces.

It is a matter of awareness on the one hand and knowledge on the other. If in Bangkok, where people earn more, people are getting fatter and that problem manifests itself less in Isaan, this indeed has to do with income and the opportunity to consume the wrong food.
In the Netherlands, it is precisely the lowest incomes who run the greatest risk of becoming overweight. Awareness and knowledge play a subordinate role for them. For higher incomes there, the social status is, being too fat is simply not done, awareness and knowledge often prevent them from becoming too overweight.

This reality is very disturbing but also strange.

After all, everyone of us knows family members, acquaintances, neighbors, colleagues, etc. who have had a gastric ring placed or undergone a gastric reduction, and therefore no longer fall into the group of overweight (let alone obese) people.

In other words, speaking purely naturally, I think it concerns 50% (!!!) of the world's population, only 20% has done something about it surgically.

    It is indeed a drama!

As long as adults do not have self-discipline in their eating and drinking habits, we will decline in all our prosperity. Fast food chains can also start to learn to moderate portions.
I don't see why half a liter of Coke should be served with menus if necessary.
I also wonder when the USA is removed from the statistics, is it really that serious with humanity.
