The corona situation in a country is no longer decisive for the color of the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All safety and health risks are taken into account again.

This makes long journeys a bit easier. Travel insurance also offers full coverage. The quarantine obligation upon return to the Netherlands will expire from 25 February.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will largely disconnect the color in the travel advice from the corona situation in a country. In this way, the world will become a lot less orange and travel to more destinations will be possible, says spokesman Dirk Jan Nieuwenhuis.

Exceptions are countries where a new, worrying virus variant has emerged. In that case, a country is still automatically color coded orange: only strictly necessary trips. Travelers must be quarantined again when they return from such a country.

Travel advice is being adjusted step by step

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will gradually adjust the travel advice from 16 February. This is done, among other things, on the basis of advice from Dutch embassies and consulates worldwide. All safety and health risks are taken into account, including corona.

The countries for which travel advice has been relaxed since today are;

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • United Kingdom
  • Australië
  • Mexico
  • Morocco
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • Indonesia
  • Brazil
  • South Africa

Travel within and outside Europe

Countries outside the European Union/Schengen zone that had the color codes green or yellow before the corona pandemic will get them back - if the security situation allows this. The quarantine obligation upon return to the Netherlands will expire on 25 February. Travelers must, however, carry a negative test certificate with them.

The European countries currently have yellow travel advice (travel is possible, but there are risks). Travelers within the EU need a digital proof of corona: proof of vaccination, proof that you have recovered from corona, or a negative test result (test certificate). This will remain the case, even if countries in the EU receive green travel advice. This has been agreed at European level.

Travel well prepared

The advice to travelers is and remains: travel well prepared. Corona is not gone. Measures abroad are still in effect. Think of test obligations, QR codes and face masks. There are also countries that do not yet allow tourists, such as New Zealand. In the unlikely event that travelers abroad contract corona, the corona rules apply in the country of destination.

So before you book, read the entire travel advice for the country of destination on NederlandWereldwijd.nl or in the Travel app.

Mandatory masks

Anyone who is going to fly in the near future, for example to Thailand, will still have to wear a face mask at Schiphol and on the plane. The Dutch cabinet will abolish the face mask obligation as of 25 February everywhere, except at airports, on airplanes and on public transport.
