As expected, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has accepted parliament's request to be the new king. As of December 1, Thailand has a new king: Maha Vajiralongkorn or Rama X of the Chakri dynasty.

The coronation and the accompanying ceremony will take another year and will only take place after Bhumibol has been cremated.

Yesterday a ceremony was held at the Grand Palace because the Bhumibol passed away 50 days ago. It is repeated one more time on the 100th day. Besides the crown prince, other members of the royal family were also present. Similar ceremonies took place elsewhere in the country.

Last night, King Rama X knelt in the Grand Palace before a portrait of his parents, Bhumibol and Sirikit (pictured above).
