The dreaded tropical storm Pabuk, now weakened to a depression, slowly moved towards the Andaman Sea yesterday afternoon. Pabuk still provides a lot of rain in the northern provinces of Phetchaburi and Prachup Khiri Khan.

Nakhon Si Thammarat province has been the hardest hit. Water from the mountains threatened to flood the city center last night, after several roads had already been flooded earlier that day.

The total damage done by Pabuk is still difficult to estimate precisely. The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting of the UTCC estimates the economic damage at 3 to 5 billion baht. 32 power poles were blown over in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said. The electricity company started repairs on Friday.

The storm eventually killed four people: three in Nakhon Si Thammarat and a fisherman in Pattani. Animals such as cattle also perished.

Pabuk also has an impact on tourism. Many tourists gave up and left the popular holiday islands in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea prematurely.
