Chilean cyclist on world tour killed in Korat
A 48-year-old Chilean world traveler who wanted to set a world record with his bicycle was hit by a pick-up in Korat on Saturday afternoon and died. His Singaporean wife and two-year-old son suffered minor injuries.
The man and his family were on their way to Nakhon Ratchasima. On the way, the bicycle was hit by a pick-up truck belonging to a Thai driver (64). The man stated that he had not seen the cyclist.
The victim planned to get a mention in the Guinness World Record by cycling 250.000 kilometers around the world in five years. The Chilean had started his cycling trip in 2010 and had cycled about 140.000 kilometers. He had met his wife during his journey. After Thailand he would cycle through Australia.
In 2013, a British couple who traveled the world by bicycle was also killed in Thailand. That happened in Chachoengsao, the pick-up truck driver admitted at the time that he had hit the British couple when he was not paying attention because he was busy with his mobile phone.

Then the pick-up driver (a danger on the road) must be quite blind
if you don't see this cyclist??
How sad, say a few more months until his final goal and then this serious accident. You will see this happen as a wife. Indeed, this driver of the pick-up has been blind. He clearly has things on his trailer of his bicycle. I wish him a lot of strength with this loss.
yes very much for his wife and child.
My son also made a similar trip by bicycle a few years ago, but through all the countries of Europe, many motorists have no interest in this and simply drive such a cyclist away. I wish the family the best of luck.
It will just happen to you.
Discover every day that some drivers have no eyes on the road. If you pass a parked car, there is a chance that following cars will give you less space than the width of your bicycle handlebars. Also be careful of people in a hurry who rush past you like crazy and then brake a few meters further to drive into a garden or parking lot. Drivers never look before opening the doors. And then the stupid comments such as “If you had not been here, nothing would have happened here” (police statement).
Terrible, how can you miss this man. Somchai must have had another bottle of booze and got behind the wheel. Again, two years ago http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2013/feb/18/british-cyclists-killed-thailand
I do thousands of kilometers with my scooter every year and every time I see cyclists I wonder, why? It is life-threatening, first of all the roads are not made for it and secondly the other road users just don't take it into account! Personally I would never do it although I love cycling! Apparently there are many people who think that Thailand will adapt to their “cyclist”. Not so! Don't get me wrong, I deeply regret what happened to this family but Thailand is just not a cycling country, if you start here you know there are risks involved. Even if
you come here unprepared, I'm sure that after 1 day of cycling you already know that it might be better to leave your bike for what it is.
Well, there are plenty of beautiful roads for cyclists in Thailand. On your motorbike you are just as vulnerable, it just has to do with driving behavior. A motorbike is also dangerous in Thailand if you are not careful.
