Fight against cybercrime: Thai Prime Minister launches offensive against online scammers
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) to intensify efforts against online fraud and call center scams, a threat that also affects him. He emphasizes the importance of public vigilance against these increasingly sophisticated scams.
To support victims of online fraud, the government has set up the helpline 1441. At the same time, the DES Ministry is investigating reports of possible breaches of the government database, which could compromise the personal data of millions of Thai citizens.
In collaboration with the Office of the Commission for the Protection of Personal Data (PDPC), the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) and the Cyber Crime Bureau (CCIB), new strategies are being developed to detect and prevent scams. This includes keeping an eye on unusual activity on SIM cards, which are often used by scammers.
The PDPC has launched the 'PDPC Eagle Eye' surveillance system to monitor data breaches. A recent review of various organizations' data processing practices revealed several cases of personal data breaches and the sale of this information. The government is taking legal action against those involved and stands ready to cooperate with Interpol in cases involving perpetrators in other countries.
