Home » News from Thailand » Bridge from Koh Samui to mainland Surat Thani must cost 30 billion baht
It is the wish of the islanders on Koh Samui, but whether it will ever come, I doubt it. The idea was born two years ago: a bridge that connects Koh Samui with the mainland of Surat Thani.
Yesterday, the idea was presented to Minister Phiphat of tourism and sports by local administrators. According to them, the bridge can stimulate tourism. Tourists no longer have to wait in a long line for a ferry, which runs between 5 and 19 p.m., or opt for the plane.
It is better for the residents on Samui because they can be taken to a hospital on the mainland more quickly. At present this is done with speedboats, which can take up to 6 hours in some cases, says director Khamrop of the local Samui Hospital. Last year, 342 patients were transferred to the mainland, this year already 361.
The cost of the 18-kilometer bridge is estimated at 30 billion baht. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, 2,6 million tourists visited the island last year, including all visitors to Surat Thani. They spent 64,7 billion baht.

Would be very useful, but I doubt whether Bangkok Airways also thinks this! Will they cost a lot of customers?
Complete madness, if you ask me! As if Thailand couldn't spend that 30 billion better… Koh Samui will then become even more touristy than it already is, not a good thing in my opinion. If tourists really want to go to Samui, they fly or take the ferry. TAT has a big thumb, so take all their numbers with a bucket of salt 🙂 Medical emergencies can be helped by helicopter.
All (Thai) arguments can be easily countered by better and cheaper options.
100% agree. Would it be better to buy fast catamarans like the Seacat in the Philippines and problem solved or why not hovercraft?
That is precisely the problem, the ferry, because it takes too long and the plane is too expensive. Then read the story again. I myself am in favor because it is good for the economy, good for employment, good for tourism. And why people are not using a helicopter now: because it is not possible and/or too expensive. The fact that there are other options is something that people really consider themselves and weigh them up, hence this bridge. The story is about the possibilities of the bridge and don't come up with the story that there are better and cheaper options such as another boat. Every boat crossing has to do with loading and unloading people, cars and goods, in bad weather there may be less or no sailing and when it is busy, long queues are formed waiting for the next trip.
Doesn't seem like a very good plan to me. It is better to tackle the monopoly of Bangkok Airways. Those high prices keep many tourists away.
On the other hand, of course, the tourists who come now have more to spend.
Well, looking at the budgets available, this bridge will never be built… But since it would be a very bad investment, there is of course a chance that they will do it anyway 🙂
