Airports of Thailand (AoT), the manager of the six major airports in Thailand, wants to invest in the airports of Mae Sot and Khon Kaen with the aim of gaining experience in regional aviation.

In the North, AoT manages the airports of Chiang Mai and Mae Fa Luang. When Mae Sot in northwest Tak province joins, regional development will be supported. Tak is one of the ten provinces where a so-called special economic zone (SEZ) will be set up to stimulate Thailand's border trade with neighboring countries.

For the Northeast, AoT is considering the airport of Khon Kaen possibly also the airport of Udon Thani. The regional function must be strengthened in order not to lose passengers due to the development of railway lines, such as the high-speed lines.
