Tourists from Australia, France and the United States, among others, can travel to Thailand without a visa, but they do need a non-Covid statement to show that they are free from Covid-72 19 hours before departure. Also, one must first spend 14 days in a quarantine hotel upon arrival, said Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesperson for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

To make up for the loss of vacation days during the quarantine period, tourists are now allowed to stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa instead of 45 days. However, one must undergo three Covid-19 tests during the quarantine.

By testing more, Thailand wants to investigate whether they can reduce the quarantine period from 14 to 10 days. A decision will be made on this around 15 January.

A shorter quarantine is aimed at attracting more foreign tourists, he added.

That's all well and good: a visa of 45 days instead of 30. But can't or don't they want to understand that for many tourists, and especially for those traveling for a shorter stay, the quarantine measure remains the main obstacle?
I have been staying in Thailand for 17 month twice a year for 1 years. I would certainly not object to multiple Covid tests, but there is the financial picture of the quarantine, as well as the lack of time for a longer stay for now.
Perhaps we could send messages about this to this Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration or other tourism authorities with as many Thailandblog readers as possible, pointing out that all (in their eyes) relaxations are of no avail as long as that quarantine measure is maintained. Or does Thailand not trust the tests that were taken abroad before departure? Knowing Thailand, the financial picture for the hotels, which are on the quarantine list, will also have to do with this

    • Yvan Temmermann says up

I just read in Pattaya Mail that ATTA, Association of Thai Travel Agents, stated that 95% of tourists do not wish to return as long as the quarantine measures remain in place. They also continue to press for the abolition of this measure. Hope makes life right?

    • Rob says up

Hi Yvan, and you think that the Thai rulers are sensitive to our e-mails, well no, they are totally self-thinking hotemots, nothing, no help for the affected entrepreneurs or whatever.
No, unfortunately this policy does not allow the common man to come to Thailand given the high costs of quarantine and all other additional costs.
So only possible for the happy few.

      • john says up

may have nothing to do with thai rulers but just caution. I can imagine it being difficult to access. Many countries in Europe also have strict measures, closing all non-essential businesses, etc. Again, this has nothing to do with those in power, but with defensible care. But, that's my opinion. Don't want to start a discussion about this. Nobody knows ! But everyone has an opinion.

I read in the Bangkok Post that 3 corona tests are now administered as a trial instead of 2 during the quarantine period. Even if this means that the quarantine will be shorter in the near future for some countries, to 10 days or perhaps it will expire in a year, you still have the costs of the tests at 5000 baht each. These 3 tests will cost you more than 400 Euro in Thailand and then tests before departure including Fit to Fly of more than 200 Euro. So together 600 Euro for some corona tests; without quarantine it is still a lot of money.
And compulsory health insurance because they do not tell you that, but as long as there is Covid-19, Thailand will demand insurance from foreigners: an extra 200 to 300 euros.

      • luc says up

They are NOT working on those 3 tests yet, is a proposal for when they bring the quarantine period to 10 days. And those tests are included in the price when you book an ASQ hotel. Some give incorrect information here.

        • Ger Korat says up

Some do provide the correct information, including source references. Here is a piece of text from the article of the Bangkok Post today that I had read:

While in quarantine, arrivals would undergo three Covid-19 tests, up from two required previously, Dr Taweesilp said, adding that more testing could potentially lead to shorter quarantine periods in the future
(Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA))

          and the link:

          • luc says up

You can still read, I think, it clearly says "in the future", so not now.

            • Ger Korat says up

Had even mentioned the link and then anyone can click and read it. And it says that now ( ! ) 3 times are tested and before that was 2 times.

And here is the English text from the article:

Earlier, each arrival was tested twice during 14-day quarantine, first three to five days after arrival, and then again on days 11-13.

Each arrival is now tested three times, on day 0-1, day 9-10 and day 13-14, Dr Taweesilp said.

    • chris says up

If I understand it all correctly, the incubation period of the Corona virus is a maximum of 14 days. Why not take two tests in the country of origin: one about 20 days before departure and the second 3 or 4 days before departure? If both tests are negative, there is no obstacle to traveling to your holiday country and no reason for quarantine. Of course there must be enough tests.

      • Lung addie says up

Flimsy reasoning… .. test negative 3-4 days before departure…. yes and in those 3-4 days between the test and the departure you cannot get infected? Try selling that...

Another one of the daily nice talks, they can safely extend the list to the world wide, no cat will come to spend 1 days in a luxurious prison before starting its holiday. A government that is constantly lagging behind and is strangling the tourism sector.
People with a retirement visa are also forgotten about returning.
Leaving will still be possible, but the return journey is a problem.

  4. Ger Korat says up

The largest group of tourists in a normal year are Asian tourists with a stay in Thailand of about 5 days. The luxury of a long holiday, leave of many weeks to 2 months, as in many European countries, the Asians do not have any more than, for example, the one in the US. That leaves a small group of retirees who, during these corona times, are already afraid to go outside the home, let alone visit a far-away destination. In addition to the additional costs of the quarantine, which takes a significant bite out of the holiday budget, in addition to the mandatory 15 days of quarantine/confinement, not many will like it, and deserted beaches, empty restaurants and many closed shops in tourist resorts is also not very attractive for a long-term stayer. tourist. Do not expect much from the extension of the visa exemption, because if you can already visit a long-distance destination, you also meet the conditions of a visa, such as sufficient income, and with sufficient free time, the visa exemption does not add anything for the large majority.

Who knows? How much does 14 days ASQ hotel cost on average? Might be interested anyway. If I can set off all (extra) costs against the usual expenses.

    • luc says up

Depends which hotel you choose. For the Thai it is free if they take a hotel that is offered to them. There are lists on the websites of the embassies.

Lower limit 28.000, upper limit 150.000. The most choice between 40.000 and 60.000.

In a normal situation we would have flown to Bangkok today, for 2 weeks of traveling around with the family. Everything booked and arranged, everything canceled again. Received most of the money back. My heart is a little shrouded. Still, I don't feel like ever going to Thailand with the family if a quarantine of 14 days (or slightly shorter) must first take place. And that will be for many tourists who would like to come for 3 weeks or less: that simply does not make up for it. Hope the vaccines will mean something for this. Maybe 2022?

  7. adjective says up

45 days out of 15 days in quarantine in an ASQ hotel. On average you will spend 1200 euros. Add to this the food and drinks, covid test, fit to fly form and flight ticket. So you have already lost 2000 euros before your holiday actually starts. And the annoying thing is that you have to arrange everything through the embassy. Well I would say have a nice holiday. pfff.

    • Khunchai says up

I can name a number of reasons not to go to Thailand, but 1 reason would be enough. Holiday is a period to spend a nice time in a carefree way and enjoy your holiday wherever that may be. Due to all the rules and restrictions, this is not possible in Thailand at the moment and for me there is no comparison of what a holiday likes this way, so I am not wasting my time and money.

    • Cornelis says up

It will have little influence on the decision whether or not to go, but to be clear: food and drinks are, contrary to what you suggest, included in the ASQ price.

      • luc says up

I don't understand that there are people who want to imagine it differently than it actually is. Indeed, food and drinks are included in the price, even the tests are included in the price. And the fit to fly is also free.

        • Ger Korat says up

Before departure you must take a PCR test: costs Euro 150 in the Netherlands, the same before departure a Fit to Fly: costs you approximately 50 Euro in the Netherlands and in addition, for many, (extra) health insurance to meet the 100.000 USD COVID requirement -coverage: costs from 200 Euro depending on length of stay.

          • adjective says up

You forget the hotel costs for the quarantine. You have to pay for it yourself if you are not Thai.

        • adjective says up

Partly correct. You must pay for any extra items you order yourself. You can also have food and drinks delivered from outside. You must pay for Covid tests done in the Netherlands before you leave, as well as the fit to fly form. You do not have to pay for Covid tests in Thailand yourself.

          • Cornelis says up

In most ASQ hotels you are expressly not allowed to have food delivered. That is also the official rule for the hotels. Understandable: the hotel must also meet strict requirements with regard to meals and their preparation/distribution, which is also monitored by the hospitals with which it cooperates. The disaster is incalculable if, for example, food poisoning occurs in the quarantine situation. Well, and then a guest with Grab or something has food delivered from some food stall and you lose control,,,,,,,,,

            • adjective says up

Then my wife was lucky. She could. But it is not really necessary because you will be well taken care of. But sometimes you miss that little bit extra when you're locked up for 15 days. And if you have the option, why not take advantage of it.
I also read that at some hotels you can leave the room after a few days. That was not allowed in the hotel where my wife was staying. So you see that the rules are different everywhere.

      • Caspar says up

I understand that all food is delivered in plastic packaging, which must be a mountain of plastic from all those ASQ Hotels.
In the Big C you no longer get plastic bags, you have to put everything in your own bags and rightly so.
