Thailand's Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that Thailand could face a drought as a result of the El Niño phenomenon until early next year.

TMD Director General Chomparee Chompurat has indicated that rainfall in all regions of Thailand has remained below average despite the rainy season starting more than a month ago. Nationally, rainfall was 25% below average and dry spells are forecast in several regions until July 17. The director-general warned that the situation could worsen in November and could last into early 2024.

At the same time, the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has reported that the capacity of its four major dams, including the Bhumibol, Sirikit, Kwai Noi Bamrung Daen and Pa Sak Jolasid dams, averages 40%. Recent rainfall has contributed to raising water levels in some areas, but authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Authorities of concerned departments will also take measures to limit the impact on water resources, agricultural activities and the general ecosystem. The public, and farmers in particular, are advised to prepare for the approaching dry conditions.
