In a remarkably swift court case, a 23-year-old Thai man, Ronakorn “Pon” Romreun, has been sentenced to death by the Chonburi court for the brutal rape and murder of 27-year-old German tourist Mariam Beelte from Hildesheim on the island of Koh Si Chang in April of this year.

World news

The murder on April 7 not only shocked the small community of Koh Si Chang of which 'Pon' was a part, but also made international news around the world. This blog also paid attention to it, see www.thailandblog.nl/nieuws-uit-thailand/thaise-man-24-verkracht-en-moord-duitse-touriste-27-op-koh-si-chang

Court

During the court hearings, the following picture of events emerged: Mariam parked her rented motorcycle at the foot of a series of stone steps leading to a spot where the flag of Rama V is displayed. There she met Pon, who asked her to have sex. She rejected that and ascended the 360 steps to the top of the hill.

Moments later Pon followed her and near the top he attacked her on the steps and raped her. She resisted, but the climb to the top had weakened her. He then hit her with a piece of wood. She fought back and managed to flee down the steps. Pon threw a stone after her, which hit her head, causing her to fall. He then repeatedly hit her on the head and face with stones until she was dead. He then dragged her into the undergrowth where he covered her with stones.

The corpse was quickly discovered by another tourist and the police were able to arrest Pon quickly afterwards. Pon immediately admitted to the crime, he was high on drugs at the time of the rape and murder.

The court sentenced the man to death.

Whoa, that's how they do it in Thailand. Nothing to do and keep wet and weekend leave, but justice after 2 months. He won't do this a second time.

Own fault. Also sending murderers and rapists to Thailand.

Tidy is tidy. Not possible, of course, in a manner of speaking.

They will probably not carry out the death penalty, but commute it to roughly 100 years.
In itself safe for other people and prevents suffering, as so often allowed / can happen in the Netherlands.

A rather tasteless response with the intention of undermining our legal system. Khunflip forgets to mention that if the perpetrator or his daddy had been wealthy, the sentence might have been much less or he might never have seen a court.

To begin with, I find Khunflip's response distasteful.
As mentioned in an earlier post, the death penalty is discriminatory, it is always the least wealthy who are executed and it serves no purpose.
If the death penalty really had a deterrent effect, the death penalty would not be imposed. And when it comes to law, Thailand doesn't exactly have a spotless track record.

    Fantastic! Death will meet him!

Reading this made me think of my own daughters. Both less than thirty. If someone were to do that to my daughters, I would most like to see him suffer as much as his victim.
The death penalty with a syringe is still much too soft. He should suffer for years and then be stoned to death just like his victim.
I am neither in favor nor against the death penalty or any punishment. I don't know enough about the subject for that. But I think an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, is a good method.
Then it is incomprehensible to me what men have in their heads to commit such acts. Or rather, what's wrong with them.
Especially here in Thailand, where it really doesn't take much effort to get your sexual pleasures. Well, some guys still think that every western woman just wants to have sex. I once heard an idiotic reasoning: all you have to do is ask and they'll go to bed with you. So every Western woman who comes to Thailand is always available for sex.
There are far too many idiots in this world and people like this murderer and rapist, who confess to it too, deserve nothing but an exit. Why burden society with them any longer? If he were to live and be released again, there is a good chance that he will do it again.

You have put that nicely on paper and in this case it is retaliation (the death penalty) and not a measure that is imposed as a result of the crime committed. A measure would not do justice to what happened. Retaliation is actually paying in kind and for imposing the measure would apply correction of the offender. With these types, the latter is not an option. In my opinion it doesn't get any better. Weak healers make stinking wounds and this gentleman, who apparently has no control over himself, is not worthy of his place in this world. Sex is often just a fallacy with these types of people (compulsive) domination over the other is more relevant. The woman must listen to the man in question. When she resists, the true nature emerges, enhanced by psychotogenic substances, as this case indicates. You know them the alcohol and drugs that destroy the body and affect the mind, especially with excessive and long-term use. Many are not resistant to it, but fortunately not all are malicious. There are people who then think of extenuating circumstances, but that is something of the past and fortunately no longer applicable. I have often heard it "I couldn't help it and I was drunk or under the influence of...." The young woman doesn't come back with it, but repetition is no longer an issue and protection is not as far as this gentleman is concerned. need more.
