Earlier this year, Prime Minister Prayuth seems to have pushed for a thorough reform and reorganization of the Royal Thai Police. Not much attention was paid to his remark at the time, at least I didn't see or read much of it.

But see, the plan is now getting a follow-up. The Daily News reports that the chief of the RTP, General Suwat Chaengyodsuk, has instructed the recently reinstated Lt-Gen Surachate Hakparn - better known as Joke - to prepare a first step for a reform plan.

Joke is going to organize an opinion poll, in which the public is invited to come up with suggestions and ideas about how and what the reorganization of the police should take shape. How that opinion poll will be conducted is not yet known, but the Thai public will be listened to intensively in the next 4 months.

If this post should tempt you to also climb into the pen to make some recommendations, I tell you not to. On Thaivisa there is already plenty of attention with a lot of comments, but beware: we foreigners are not asked anything!

It is reserved for the Thai population to respond, but a "sour" commentator on Thaivisa said: Then nothing will change, because the Thais think for 99% that the police are already doing an excellent job!

Much will be said and written on this subject!

Wasn't there a survey like this a year or so ago? We can generally guess the result. The causes too. We know from asking around that the Thai population sees the police as the most corrupt, followed closely by the military (see “Corruption in Thailand, the view of the Thais themselves” by one Mr. Kuis). Salaries are low and money flows upwards. Many government bodies would need a lot of pruning shears. Think of: decent salaries, dismissal from the top, no promotion to inactive posts, transparency, etc.

Perhaps the police, army and other services can take a look at how things have been cleaned up in Ukraine, for example. There are certainly lessons to be learned.

Utopia is a beautiful city — it will be years before it can be built.
So be realistic about this one.
As a foreigner with or without a connection to Thailand, keep calm, try to express your opinion and thoughts internally (within family, Thai circles of friends and other channels).

can't you??? What are you doing in that naturally beautiful country???

Western societies and ditto legislation better?? Thought no - only better camouflaged corruption and ditto regulations are also in force.

Am I totally wrong?? Explain to me, improve my vision.
