Oh, oh, watch out for the katoey!

They are inseparable from Thailand and a tourist attraction, the ladyboys. Another name is kathoey or katoey (in Thai กะเทย, pronounced “katoy”).

A katoey is born as a man, but wants to go through life as a woman. Shemale in English. Some ladyboys are female above and male below. Some opt for a total gender change and undergo surgery to have the male genitals removed and reconstructed into a vagina.

Transsexual

Thai hospitals and doctors have excellent knowledge and a good reputation in this field. A lot of transsexuals from other countries come to Thailand to be operated here. However, most katoey in Thailand are half male and half female. They undergo hormone treatment for breast enlargement, usually followed by silicone breast augmentation.

In the picture with a ladyboy

You will find the ladyboys everywhere in Thailand, they work in the supermarket, as a receptionist, chambermaid, tour guide and of course also in the Thai sex industry. Especially the tourists love it and enjoy it. The heavily made-up and overly feminine katoeys, usually decked out in sexy clothes and extremely high heels, love to be the center of attention. They like to have their picture taken with Wim and Bep from Harderwijk. A tip of 20 baht or so is appreciated.

Cabaret and transvestite shows

In Pattaya you can see the ladyboys in a number of bars on Walking Street. Alcazar and Tiffany's are two famous ladyboy shows in Pattaya that have a good schedule. A must for every tourist. Many ladyboys can be found in the bars of Patong Beach on Phuket. And to be fair, there are some very beautiful specimens that are prettier than many Thai women.

A large number of ladyboys are employed in Thai prostitution. They earn a nice living because they are quite popular. Both gay and straight men hire the ladyboys for some erotic services. The handsome specimens also ask for a decent fee for that.

Pushy

Thai ladyboys or katoey are more often than bargirls involved in things like theft and violence. After all, they are originally men, if they are angry or hurt they just hit it off. They also often go further in the search for money.

Katoey can be quite pushy and if you don't want to use their services. Especially later in the evening or night it is good to watch out for this. It's best to ignore and just move on. Don't make the mistake of laughing or insulting them, many a tourist has regretted it. Katoey are rarely alone and usually in groups with other katoey. Before you know it, you'll be fighting with the whole group.

Why are there so many ladyboys in Thailand?

This question is often asked and also comes up regularly on all kinds of forums. To be honest, I don't know either. In my search for an answer, I came across a number of explanations that seemed realistic to me. Among other things, it would have to do with the upbringing within Thai culture. Role patterns are less fixed here than with us in the west. A child does not necessarily have to behave like a boy or a girl. Parents don't encourage that either. When a katoey starts to behave and dress like a girl more often and the parents don't make a big deal of it, then the development to ladyboy is usually a fact. Another reason is simply a financial one. The choice to go through life as a katoey is also often a money-driven choice.

There are many katoeys in Thailand's public life, think of TV stars, singers and models. There are even katoey beauty contests. There are several katoey movies like 'Beautiful Boxer' that's the true story of a katoey who became champion Muay Thai.

A famous katoey is Parinya Charoenphol (Thai: ปริญญา เจริญผล), also called Toom. She is a Thai boxer, model and actress.

Katoeys seem to be an accepted part of Thai society. Part of this probably has to do with Buddhism and the teaching of tolerance towards others. However, in Asian countries with a strong Buddhist influence, such as Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Laos and Japan, you see much less ladyboys.
The Thai belief that life should be fun (sanuk) may also play a role. When Thais see a katoey, they like it and smile. They also joke about it but not in an annoying way.

In my opinion, it is mainly the Thai society, which is so open and tolerant, which explains the large number of ladyboys.
The tolerance of the authorities has its limits, by the way. When a katoey volleyball team became national champion and two of the team were selected for the national team, the government intervened. They withheld the selection of the two katoey because they thought it was not good for Thailand's image.

I'd love to hear readers' comments on this point.

How do you recognize a ladyboy?

If you don't want to be surprised in your hotel room, it's good to pay attention to a few things if you don't trust it. But, if he/she does pull out his trunk, I give no guarantees.

  • Men have an Adam's apple, which, by the way, can be camouflaged with a scarf. It can also be done surgically these days, so…
  • Watch the hands and feet. If they are big then it is a Katoey.
  • The ladyboys are taller than Thai women.
  • A low or exaggerated voice is an indication.
  • Large breasts, if they do opt for implants, they usually don't take the smallest ones.
  • They behave in an exaggeratedly feminine way, which is evident from the walking and hip swaying.

Comic situations

In a lady bar where mainly women work, there is sometimes also a kathoey in between. It is always a laugh when a tourist is flirting heavily with one Ladyboy and notices nothing. Usually they already have some beer behind their teeth. Too bad you can't see his face once he's in his hotel room, finds out that his 'dream woman' turns out to be a male.

Not only in Thailand, there are also quite a few in Brazil. Once I was walking in Rio de Janeiro near the Copacabana and saw a beautiful woman with a nice miniskirt and a pair of beautiful legs… then I heard “her” talking!
An uncle of my ex-wife was known to like going out with katoys…. and once there was an interview on Dutch TV with that little presenter (Bartje?) who asked the Brazilian Katoys if they had had all the surgery. No, was their answer, because that was exactly what the men wanted: an extra!
I think this will be exactly the case here in Thailand…
In Hua Hin there is a katoy who has a clothing store in Market Village. Pretty nice person, but ugly as hell (just looks like a man with long hair in women's clothes)… But: always helpful and friendly… I like to go there, because he/she/it has nice T-shirts from real cotton at a good price.
I have absolutely no problem with it, as long as these people don't exaggerate. I even had a brief relationship with a beautiful Katoi years ago, but I still prefer a real woman. You still see too many masculine traits. The appearance of a woman is different and much more attractive to me…

If you want to write the pronunciation of กะเทย correctly in Dutch, it is ka-theuj (ka = low tone, theuj = middle tone). So not ka-thoei or ka-toi.

I have now read the whole story. Very well written story and very interesting. I don't want anything to do with katheuj. Some of my parents-in-law also live in the village and then I behave like other Thai people: friendly without further ado.

Some – for me – notable features:
    - heavy voice;
    – narrower pelvis, narrower hips;
    – taller on average in body length;
    – bigger head.

But indeed, sometimes very difficult to distinguish from a real Thai woman…

The simplest way to know for sure if you are dealing with a Ladyboy is to look at the length of the ring finger and the length of the index finger.
In men, the ring finger is longer.
In women, the length ratio ring finger / index finger is at least equal, but usually the ring finger is considerably shorter.

    • Daniel M says up

I just checked with my wife:
with me the difference between the two fingers is half a nail length, with my wife the middle finger is considerably longer than the ring finger…

      • Hernias says up

@DanielM, it's about the ring finger and the INDEX finger and not the middle finger.

In Thai dating settings, ladyboys fall short for their extroverted behavior.

Women, even true female freelancers on the street:
    – Giving very subtle, careful and shy flirting signals

    Ladyboys and bargirls:
-Make contact in a direct and open Western way

The easiest way is to just ask the man / woman and you will get an honest answer in 99%, if in doubt, just ask for the ID card and if he / she does not want to show it, then it is almost certainly a boy .success

I'm surprised at the ill-considered opinions here. With transsexuals it's like with other people: you find all kinds. Apparently contact here is limited to the sex life in pattaya? You will find transsexuals in all professions in Thailand – all over Southeast Asia, by the way, and stupid generalizations are not very helpful. I don't know how there are so many, but I notice that they usually come from poorer backgrounds and that the morals in those environments are not taken very seriously: mothers with children from different fathers are very common and perhaps there is a reason for this? By the way, I think that there are also surprisingly many homosexuals and lesbians in tgailand. Why? No idea…

This is only the beginning of the story, the ladyboys can also be divided into all kinds of categories, until it drives you crazy and then try to keep everything apart.
The exaggerated feminine behavior and hip swings are very noticeable, but they certainly don't all do that.
If in doubt, just ask. A ladyboy will feel honored because he looks so much like a woman and the same applies to a lady, because the most beautiful women are ladyboys (in short).
By the way, I've never been 'surprised' before. Most ladyboys who are not sure whether the customer knows what kind of meat he has in the tub, report themselves that they are ladyboy before they go to the hotel.
99% of the ladyboys are not waiting for a bugger either.
Part of that one other percent is often 'in the early hours on Beach Road' and I would not recommend that as a starting point, especially for beginners.

Did that volleyball team become the men's or the women's champion? When it comes to the women, have they produced enough hormones not to speak of competition falsification?
Reminds me of the South African athlete Semenya. This comparison is not 100% correct, because she is a lady with an incorrect hormone level.

I usually recognize the ladyboys very quickly…they often touch their hair all the time and are very outgoing.

Some real Thai women can also be outgoing, but most of them are a bit more careful if they don't know you.

And yet I was once surprised. Fortunately not in the hotel room, but that was because this Katoey was quite short in height.

For me it's live and let live...

  11. Marine says up

not all ladyboys are tall. I personally know some that are as small as the average Thai women 1,56.

some also don't have an adam's apple and their voice sounds as feminine as the average thai women.

has even been among the ladyboys for ten years, never had any problems with it.

even those who are in the environment behave with respect.

My hairdresser in a small rural village in Northern Thailand is a 49 year old Kathoey.
Cuts fantastic … my hair … for only 60 bath, including beard shaving.
Her knowledge of English is limited, but the conversations are always fun and entertaining.
For example, she candidly told me that she is “no operation down under” and is actively looking for the love of her life on Thaifriendly.

Before shaving, she puts the barber chair horizontally. With the razor literally on her throat, she once asked me: “Did you ever make love with a ladyboy?”

I had to swallow, making sure my Adam's apple didn't move too much under her knife 🙂
    In a high-pitched voice I replied: “No, I'm still a virgin.”
Now that was a rendezvous … in the literal sense of “se rendre” (surrender, surrender)

She knows that I am married and clearly consciously keeps a good "distance", as it should be for a Thai lady with class.

    Dear Marina,
“And yet I was once surprised. Not in the hotel room, fortunately, but that was because this Katoey was quite short in height.”

I wonder what that must have been.

Why why why? Everyone asks that question here. Have you not noticed SE Asian men are very feminine compared to our men. Beardless and finely built. I think that the difference between men and women in these countries is less than in our country. The same goes for their sex experience. More men than here are bi. For me it's in their genes and their race, I don't see any problem with that. Most men are not extremely masculine. In Thailand even less. (Noted that Thai men are rarely bald...? Also a female phenomenon) The fact is that the Thai people are among the most beautiful in the world and this at all ages and both men and women.

  15. Frank says up

if she looks too good to be true, then she's a he.
the most beautiful “women” are boys.

  16. Jacques says up

A women's volleyball team that says it all anyway. The katoey are men who use hormones to look more feminine. A sex change also has little influence on the build of the person in question. They have a different physique and often more strength than the women and therefore have a different influence on the women's group. In my opinion it would not be right to come up with a mixed volleyball team, especially if this is not done all over the world.
When running you also see women who are just like men like that Semania from South Africa if I am correct. Wins almost everything on her part but whether this is really a woman. I'm not putting my hands in the fire for it.

Yet Jo, the manager of my resort, (all his life minus 5 years of Thai) assured me that the lady I managed to get in the photo in Patthaya was not a ladyboy. So I don't know anything yet.
