Or vice versa. In both cases a feeling of despondency overwhelms me. If my internet connection via 3BB (fiber optic) in Hua Hin fails again, I call the call center. For English press 9, I am told. That's what I do and invariably get a computer lady who explains to me in her best Thai what to do. So that's not the point.

After a lot of talking back and forth, I get an English-speaking lady. At least that's what she thinks. And every time I explain that 'for English press 9' should be followed by connection with someone who speaks English. Logical right?

In broken English, through all kinds of wrong emphasis, it seems that she understood my kind request, but when I have to call again a few weeks later, after the 9 I still get a Thai tune.

The connection has been broken, reports the lady who tries to stammer English. Yes, I was behind that too. The technical service will find out what is wrong.

At my TV provider CTH, the mind is at zero every day. The service is absolutely lousy. I have CTH (in HD via a dish) pretty much only for the English premier league. Plus, it's easy to know which club is playing at what time, right?

CTH thinks otherwise. Or rather, they don't give a damn. Even at the start of the match, the boys and girls operating the CTH buttons don't know who is playing. If a piece of information leaks through, the start time is incorrectly stated. Apparently it is difficult to convert the English time to that in Thailand. Sometimes the time on my decoder is correct, but usually not.

Luckily I can switch the Thai commentary on my remote to that from England. Unfortunately, this has to be done channel by channel. CTH changes the order of the channels almost every week. Which means I have to start all over again per channel.

Last year I was also able to watch the F1 via CTH. Not anymore this year. If I still want to see the race, I have to call 1619, the Fox channel reports. Do this and get bogged down in a cacophony or the how and what. The conclusion is that I do not have access to this channel. I had already realized that, but I want to know how I can see F1. That's where the conversation ends.

However, it is nice if during English football the connection with England is lost for a while. Then suddenly you see two or three Thai football commentators, the Wise Men from the East. They look helplessly at each other for a few seconds, in the absence of an autocue. Planning for the unforeseen may be wasted effort for many Thais. That makes a lot of good….

@Hans Bos: a big fat compliment for this series of posts. Well written and truthfully recorded. I totally share your annoyances. Finally someone dares to write down the hard truth. I am not one of those Dutch people who like to talk about “our beloved Thailand”. That's why I'm definitely leaving next month.

Switch to True, don't have all those problems.

Back to current affairs. CTH has rightfully gone defunct and True has regained the rights to the Premier League. Funnily enough with often the same Wise Men from the East of CTH. However, True also usually has no idea about the upcoming matches. The notification only takes place when the match has already started… I only get True's four sports channels via the dish, for 399 baht per month. I only use it when the internet connection with wifi fails.
