Reader question: Sores after insect bite in Thailand
Dear readers,
I have been back from Thailand for 1 week. On my right leg I had a small sore (due to an insect bite) and it started to become inflamed.
In the meantime I have that in 6 places. I disinfect that and put antibiotic ointment on it.
Has anyone else experienced such infections after insect bites?
Regards,
Jan
Hi Jan,
Visited my in-laws near Na chaluai last summer.
I had 17 of them and some so big and deep that a marble could fit.
Went to BKK and had it cleaned every day for a week and a half, great misery but now everything is closed again.
Reaction in the hospital was mosquito bites, I don't know what it was but holiday ruined.
Gr. Pete
Going tropical clinic is the best solution. Rotterdam and Antwerp has one, but the one in Antwerp seems to be the best. Next time when you travel, use preventive anti-mosquito ointment or spray when you go outside. You can best buy them in a Thai pharmacy and they are of very good quality. Always turn on the fan indoors because mosquitoes do not like the wind and use the mosquito net while sleeping.
I had that once too. After a visit to the doctor and a cure, I was back pretty quickly!
Seems like a bacterial infection. A cure with amoxycillin + clavulanic acid and you're above Jan again.
But doesn't your doctor know that too?
I don't understand why this question is being asked here. Go to your doctor. Tell that you have been to Thailand. If he doesn't know what it is, he will refer you to a specialist. Do not experiment yourself with all kinds of remedies following all the well-intentioned advice here on the blog.
Am very interested in several experiences, eg
Please respond after reading carefully! A lot of people on this forum live in Thailand so all advice about GP and what you can do in the Netherlands is nonsense. In the tropics, Westerners contract an infection much faster than in their home country. A wound can even very quickly turn into an (almost) fatal streptococcal infection as I have experienced. Warm land = other bacteria for which we are not resistant, but locals are. In Thailand, have your wound treated quickly in the hospital.
Two years ago I was bitten by something, two small wounds that I had treated for three weeks in the hospital, but remained infected despite washing out, disinfecting, etc., until a Dutchman recognized me as a Belgian
the advice gave BIOTEX and verily three days later those wounds were disappearing, three times a day
day cloth with biotex dissolved in water can also find this on the internet is simple and works perfectly my
woman's dog bit her was vaccinated against rabbies but hardly cured BIOTEX and a week later everything OK?
Biotex is a good remedy for inflamed wounds or wounds.
Another good old remedy, perhaps even better than biotex, is to put the affected human part in the hottest possible water with soda.
I always tend to myself. with excellent results, to treat mosquito bites, etc. immediately with the strongest possible vinegar.
Whatever helps?
A drop of ammonia, in Thailand I think only for sale in a flavored / perfumed form.
Dear Jan, good advice, take it to the Tropical Institute, they know almost immediately what it is, greetings, Leny
Thanks for the information. I did go to the doctor here and he prescribed me disinfectant and antibiotic ointment. Seems to work now just wait and see. And indeed, if things don't improve after a few days, there is still Tropical Institute Antwerp.
Immediately to the doctor. Got it in week 1 of my 4-week vacation and was able to go to the Thai doctor in week 3 because suddenly I couldn't walk in the morning because of the pain. To the Thai doctor: Too late for ointment, no more rubbing, taking antibiotics (do not smear), cleaning daily and no contact with water, not even taking a shower.
Ahoi Jan, these kinds of conditions, contracted in the tropics, can turn out to be more serious than you initially expect. Do not "doctor" yourself. Go to your doctor and if you have any doubts, get a referral to a specialist. Success with it. Ad Koens. ( [email protected] )
hi, I've already ended up in the hospital twice because of such a bloody mosquito bite just hanging on the tube for 1 week. The second time from the same spot again in the hospital. According to port hospital rotterdam after taking blood samples. Because I may have scratched open the mosquito bite and then took a shower, a bacteria has entered that wound that can also get in the Netherlands, but much faster in Thailand. My leg was red from my ankle to my knee and I couldn't walk with it because of the pain. So yes socks long pants and mosquito repellent spree . And lemon grass i. Mosquitos don't really like the garden either. Now I'm trying blackhol from a device with pasts light and a ven that then draws the mosquitoes in where they don't come out anymore. Does it work but do you get rid of the mosquitoes????
goedemorgen,
I was attacked by a swarm of insects on August 3, 2013 during my stay in Sukhothai. I hardly paid any attention to it at the time. Wrongly!! After a week I thought I had come out of the battle unscathed. However, again 3 days I started to feel very unpleasant with no discernible external characteristics. I was able to take a domestic flight to BKK on 16/08 and was able to arrange my return flight on 17/08 with AF via Paris CdG to Asd. I never got to Asd. I remember sitting on a chair at the gate in the morning. How I got on the plane is still a mystery to me. I don't remember the return flight. I was departed from this world. A few days later I regained consciousness in a Paris hospital. When I woke up I thought I was in heaven where only French was spoken. Weird thought.
It turned out that I had 5 terrible wounds on my right lower leg that I had already operated on 3 times, 1 of which included resuscitation. One of these sweet insects – or maybe several – had transmitted a flesh-eating bacteria to me. and my lower leg was eaten away in 5 places.
Now, 5 months later, I am still healing. That will take several months.
I have been incredibly lucky to have done this - without amputation!! – can tell.
Please see this contribution as a serious warning. I do plan to continue to visit Thailand…
Corey de Leeuw.
