Dear readers,

We have been living on Koh Samui during the Dutch winter months for 9 years, where we have rented a house. As in so many places in Thailand, many Russian or Ukrainian families have settled in our village. We have noticed that many ladies are without husbands, and what is even more remarkable, often heavily pregnant.

It has come to my attention that Russian ladies who have a child in Thailand can expect a hefty bounty in their home country for a number of years.

It's embarrassing to ask about it, so my question to the blog members..who knows anything about this?

Is this true?…

Yours faithfully,

Daniel

    Maternity tourism?
A phenomenon that also appeared in Europe a few years ago; Eastern European tourists who flocked to give birth in the clinics. Whether that was for good care, or at the expense of the insurance, no idea. The fact was that many hospital bills remained unpaid, according to ZNA, Hospital Network Antwerp. Would you like to read the following answers?

I don't know the answer either. Dual nationality for the kids? In any case, that is why there are always hordes of pregnant Chinese ladies in California. Until they are allowed, they will fly to the US. A month after birth they fly back home with the little one incl. his/her brand new American passport. There are even 'travel companies' that offer such fully arranged trips.

Bese Taitai, where did you get that info? Do you have a link? Don't think so, will give you one! Because you write things that are not correct and then I express myself nicely!

There are 4 ways to become this

      1) Green card naturalization
      2) Marry a US citizen
      3) Join the US Army
      4) Citizenship by your parents

No, being born in the US also counts
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_citizenship_in_the_United_States#Statute.2C_by_birth_within_U.S.

I also hear it a lot from Koreans who hope to escape their military service in this way.

As I have heard, a child born in Thailand automatically also has the Thai nationality, which then benefits and that is why I think so many Russian heavily pregnant women are seen here. This is also the case in Brazil.

      Dear Marcel,

If you do not have a Thai parent (mother or father) the road to Thai citizenship is very long and very expensive.
It is true that a child born here can stay in Thailand forever. However, if it leaves Thailand ONE time, it is just a (Russian) tourist when it returns.

Very interesting, I am currently staying in HuaHin for a month and I also noticed how many single Russian mothers are here on the beach with their child(ren)

Mmm seems a clear case to me, when the child also gets a Thai nationality, then soon .... those Russians can just put houses and land there in the name of the child with Thai nationality
Igor Jaidee Petroski smart work those Russians!!

If both father and mother do not have Thai nationality, the newly born child is not entitled to Thai nationality

It has come to my attention that most pregnant women come here to give birth
because of the better maternity facilities in Thailand. The lower costs also play a role.
The children born here do not get Thai nationality.
Many single ladies with children are often wives of husbands who work on the oil rigs, and are sometimes away from home for longer. They stable their family in Thailand, and rent out their house in Moscow, for example… and have such a lavish life here…

The answer is staggeringly simple. These people come from regions where it freezes for 4-6 months, not everyone likes that, so the Russians with a reasonable income send their wives to a warm country. The husband has to work, so he doesn't come for more than a few weeks, but the wife spends the winter there for a few months. Since the older children have to go to school, you mainly see pregnant women and women with small children. So nothing mysterious about it, if they are looking for another nationality then certainly not that of Thailand.
