Dear Thailand visitors,

We booked our tickets yesterday and are going to Thailand for the first time in our lives at the beginning of August. We were very doubtful about an organized tour or putting together a trip ourselves and we did the latter. We have traveled and seen a lot in Europe so we want something different.

I have already downloaded and printed a lot of information from your website. There is so much to see and do in Thailand that we are making a list of the excursions we want to do.

Cycling in Bangkok is great fun, we already understood. And we can go to the grand palace in Bangkok. A floating market is also fun. But our question is what you absolutely must see in Thailand. We arrive in Bangkok and stay there for three nights. Then we leave with the night train to Chiang Mai where we stay for a week. Anyone have tips for that?

Then we go back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and from there to Pattaya. We stay there for four days and then we go to Koh Samet, then to Koh Chang.

Are there other things we should see along the way? What are the best excursions? We don't like wild or dangerous things because we are already in our late forties.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Many greetings from Ben and Ciska

As you yourself have already discovered… a bike ride in Bangkok should not be missing in your trip. Here is a link from Co van Kessel: http://www.covankessel.com

    Happy holiday

On Koh Chang it is very nice to rent a scooter and drive around 90% of the island. It was not possible to go all the way around a while ago because part of the road was once washed away by the rain. How that is now… maybe someone knows.

Then a side note for renting a scooter in general. These are 125 CC, so according to the NL legislator these are motorcycles and you therefore need a motorcycle license. No problem to rent, you will get it in no time. In the event of minor damage or a collision, you can easily get away with some money. In the event of serious accidents, you can get into deeper problems if you do not have a valid motorcycle license.

and in Koh Chang you have to cross two mountains with your moped, with sharp bends. Drive calmly and watch out, everything will be fine.

If you have reasonable mobility, you can make a trip along the (inside of) city wall in Chiang Mai. About a 2,5 hour walk and you see all kinds of everyday things. It can be very hot, so bring hats. Disorganized so costs minimal.

Bicycle tour Bangkok was also the first thing that came to my mind, but a three-day bicycle tour around Chiang Mai is also highly recommended, I have heard from several visitors here.

    Hello
I can tell you Thailand is really nice.
Don't know what you like but there is something for everyone.
If you like shopping, you should definitely be in Bangkok on a weekend for the weekend market and the Paragon and MBK shopping center for bargains.
Chang Mai I recommend a golden triangle trip then you visit Burma and Laos with a boat on the Mekong river.
Further from Chiang Mai to the elephant reservoir very well cared for with attention to nature.
With a local taxi to the Doi su tep. temple in the hills for sometimes nice cooling.
We have no experience with Pattaya and Kho Samet.
Kho chang wel Very beautiful hilly island with beautiful views, always rent a scooter for 5 to 6 euros per day.
A lot of tourists go to White Sand Beach, more southerly and more centrally you have Lonely Beach where you can relax, eat and where most people don't want to leave. you still can't drive around the island.
    Hope you have fun.

Bargains MBK in Bangkok? When was Rob last in Bangkok?
Prices are skyrocketing. Thailand is betting on the rich Russian, Chinese, Indian, Iraqi etc.
Not affordable for the simple Thai. For the normal tourist, Bangkok is none
shopping paradise meer. After 5 years, this country is collapsing.

    Hi Ben and Ciska
My husband and I have been living near Chiang Mai for over 7 years. I know it well and the surroundings are beautiful here. You can take incredibly fun and beautiful bike rides here and of course also go scootering. The city of Chiang Mai can be quite busy, but it has many options. You can also book nice trips there at various agencies. The Chiang Mai Gate hotel has a Travel Agent Vieng Travel, their site is http://www.viengtravel.com/
They have arranged nice things for our guests in the past. You can just email them in Dutch, so very easy. Of course Chiang Mai has so much more you can find a lot on the internet

A must in Bangkok is definitely the De Siam Niramit Show, so wonderfully beautiful and so you get to know Thailand in an evening really worth it, a world opens up for you. These tickets are not really cheap but include dinner and pick up and return to your hotel. But I believe you can also book through their site http://www.siamniramit.com/

In Bangkok you also have “Ancient Siam” This is really nice and special. Is actually Thailand but recreated in miniature. You see a little bit of everything, for example, Ayutthaya, Sukothai, temples, a floating market and you see some beautiful beautiful Lana houses etc etc ... it is a large park and you can grab bicycles and cycle around the entire park is great fun . Definitely spend a whole day there, their site is http://www.ancientcity.com/en You can go there by taxi.

I wish you a lot of fun and above all a very nice time
    in Thailand
    Greetings
    Charly

You can in Bangkok at Co. Van Kessel also take a trip. Have fun!

To avoid misunderstandings: Co van Kessel has passed away, but his company still exists.

We went organized for the first time. Seen a lot but after that we started traveling individually. Rented a van with driver for 30 euros per day with friends. Our route has already been mapped out in the Netherlands. During the trip we consulted the travel booklets we brought along and looked at what there was to see and do along the way. I can say that you get to places where you normally don't go. Beautiful!!!! So highly recommended!!
We can also recommend going to the Helfire pass. Very impressive. More than the bridge of the River Kwai.
    Have a very nice journey.

    Dear Ben and Cisca,

I myself have been living in Mae Rim for 4 years, 15 km from Chiang Mai. From Mae Rim I do many day trips with NL people, often I go to areas where no tourists come, including the far north - Chang rai - waterfalls, etc. There is also the possibility to rent a house here, if there are any questions I will hear that well, otherwise I wish you a nice holiday.

    gr john.

go to the Baan Chang elephant park. an unforgettable experience. feeding elephants for a day (can also be longer), mahout training, walking on the back or on the neck of an elephant and finally a bath with the elephants. awesome.

    Hi Cisca and Ben,

There is indeed a lot to see and do in Thailand.
The cycling tours in Bangkok, the train ride to a fishing village from Bangkok or take the train to Chiang Mai. The day and night train both have their fun things.
In Chiang Mai we did a 2-day cycling trip with Greenwood Traffel, an overnight stay on a bamboo raft on a reservoir, this trip was really great, some climbing but really worth it.
If you are not used to climbing, you can also do a 1-day trip.
We did a 3-day trip to the North with Sam.
He has a very small travel agency opposite the Main Port, (Go with me tours) you can find him on the internet.
He can tell you a lot and you can arrange a tour in consultation with him.
You can also do a lot on your own, we walked all over Bangkok and Chiang Mai ourselves, which is possible without any problems.
    I'm sure you'll like it.
The atmosphere, the people and the country, really great.

Thailand is very beautiful everywhere except Pattaya. Bars-beer-paid sex. Of course you have that everywhere in Thailand, even in Amsterdam. But Pattaya is known for it. I would recommend Hua-Hin, Cha-Am. But never Pattaya. Northern Thailand is very beautiful. Also think of Pai and Mae Hong Song or Chiang Rai.

No excursion, just a tip. Bring deet or something similar for koh samet. A nice island but full of sand fleas 🙁

  15. egon says up

Pattaya worth it. No better restaurants than in Pattaya and cheap. Hotels very cheap and good. Don Ton beach is great to stay in. A visit to Thailand without visiting Pattaya is a miss.

I just want to respond to this.
egon says on 6 May 2013 at 05:45 – Visiting Thailand without visiting Pattaya is a miss. It really depends on what you're looking for, right? I have been coming to this beautiful country for many years and I was there for the last time in 95 or 96 and I really don't miss it at all!.

There is so much more to see than this part of Thai Torremolinos, right?
Consider, for example, Hua Hin, Koh Samet, Koh Tao, Koh Kut, etc. and then I only have a beach holiday here.

Don't get me wrong it will be fun but you have to love it and to say a holiday without Pattaya is a miss is really pure nonsense in my opinion.
