Which electronics are cheaper in Thailand?
Dear readers,
We are going to Thailand soon and I want to buy some electronics there, if it is cheaper than here in the Netherlands. I'm thinking about a new camera, headphones, power bank, VR glasses and a game console. Where is the best place to go?
Is this kind of thing cheaper in Thailand or does it not matter much? And what about customs?

Dear Rick, if you have no Thailand experience, you will quickly think that electronics are cheaper than in the Netherlands and that you can gain an advantage. I have to disappoint you. I myself do a lot in photography, the major world brands, such as Canon, Sont, Nikon, Panasonic use world prices. So if a certain camera costs 1000 dollars in New York, it will also cost almost 1000 euros in the Netherlands and in Thailand as well, but in Thai Bath. For a Dutch person it is cheaper to buy in the USA, you pay the same amount in dollars as in eruoś in the Netherlands. But then customs of course. Road advantage….
Another point of attention, how are you going to get that guarantee in the Netherlands, with a purchase in Thailand, never never of course. There are still a few things to mention that you should not buy it here, unless you live here and are very familiar with the product. a) cheaper ? Even if.. the fun quickly ends in NL, if there is a problem. My Thai video recorder, for example, could not be repaired in the Netherlands. One-way ticket to waste separation station.
b) You will simply have to declare this at customs back in NL. Then import duties and 21% VAT on it and,.., the fun is gone again. Or gamble on it, of course. Then don't cry if things are confiscated during inspection with a nice fine.

The VAT in Thailand is 7%, in the Netherlands 21% and that could already mean a considerable price difference. However, it's not that simple. As a rule, all products made in Thailand are cheaper than in the Netherlands. However, if a product is imported, the consumer will incur substantial import duties. So it depends on the product and the brand where the product is ultimately the cheapest. You can compare this for the products you mention yourself by looking up the prices in Thailand's most famous webshop (https://www.lazada.co.th) where you can buy with cash payment on delivery at the door and compare it with a webshop in the Netherlands.

On the internet, make sure it is a real Dutch supplier. Searching and comparing is much more relaxed than in Asia. Mediamarkt always has offers in January and other businesses also participate. In the many years that I traveled in Asia and compared a lot, I didn't buy anything. It is worth taking your malfunctioning laptop, for example, with you and having it repaired.
Buy branded stuff and from good stores. It's cheaper at the markets, but it's mostly junk. At customs, I thought you could take 450 euros worth of it without import duties. Electronics are usually cheaper than in Holland. Have a nice day.

My experience is that this kind of electronics is not much cheaper in Thailand.
You may be asked for receipts at customs, especially if the original packaging is also present. I think you can freely import around 450 euros from outside the EU. Above that you pay tax and if you do not declare and still check, a hefty fine.
You also have a warranty. A device purchased in Thailand can therefore be refused the importer for warranty. And there goes your minimal benefit….

Lazada is only an intermediate website for many companies that offer their goods via the internet.
So Lazada is not the selling party.
And the transport is carried out by courier companies.

If it is many times cheaper (you will be thrown to death with headphones here), then it is counterfeit stuff. In the small stalls I would not buy anything, unless you are aware that you are buying a fake.
You can buy good second hand stuff in some shops. For example, when the Samsung S9 came out, you could already get the S8 for 16000 Baht (less than a year old and almost 8000 Baht cheaper than a new one)… but you can also get that on Ebay or perhaps in a second hand shop in the Netherlands …
In any case, you can be lucky. You need to know what you want to buy, look for it and compare prices…
What you do have here in Thailand: you can sometimes get things that you don't get in the Netherlands. My Samsung Tablet with S pen was not available in the Netherlands, but the brother without S pen was. You can also get some brands of telephone in Thailand, which people in the Netherlands have not (yet) heard of and at good prices. Almost all phones here are without SIM lock. I don't know how things are in the Netherlands now, but I remember this was a problem six years ago.
I bought a Nikon camera in Bangkok in 2004, it was 20% cheaper than in NL. After 1.5 years it broke down and I handed it over to the Nikon importer in NL for repair. Could take up to 3 months. I was very angry and sent an email to the factory in Japan. !0 days later my camera was ready AND repaired free of charge. Tribute to Nikon. If you buy in Thailand, always inquire whether you get a manufacturer's warranty.
Dear Rick, I have been going to Thailand for 30 years and like you I am also a fan of electronics and new gadgets. The place to be is MBK shopping mall in Bangkok. They have everything from electronics there. You can find this on the 4th floor. A new camera will not be much cheaper, but all the gadgets around it are. Power banks of all types and latest types very affordable. iPhones, older models also very affordable. All the accessories that have just been released can be found there. Bought my children their original wireless airpods for 2 euros 95 weeks ago.
Another hint. On the top floor you have a food store where you can eat well for a few euros. You first buy a badge card on which you have a few 100 Bats placed and then you choose only 1 of the stalls.
