Dear readers,

I have lived in Thailand for a long time and have my own car registered in my name. Am also in possession of a purple booklet (international transport permit) from the Land and Transport Office in Thailand. Every time I go to Laos I need this at the border crossing.

Have traveled all over Laos and never had any problems. Now my question is whether I can also enter Cambodia with my own car and continue to Vietnam by car?

Which additional documents do I need?

Regards,

John

as far as I know, and I tried several years ago, no vehicle is allowed into Cambodia. That may change in 2016.

in Hue (Vietnam) I have already encountered Thai buses and cars, no idea how paperwork is arranged, I also regularly drive to Laos / Cambodia and assume that it must be the same to Vietnam,

I recently went there with my car, no problem at the border if you own the car, but you have to pay 100 baht per day to drive around there. They don't ask for insurance and driver's license, everything is at your own risk. Been there for 9 days and drove around in Cambodia without any problems, had no checks from the police there!.
You just have to watch out for the cows that unexpectedly cross the road! And the roads that are in very bad shape in some places. I recommend everyone to make that trip along the beautiful landscapes in Cambodia

    Dear John,
May or may not, I would advise you not to.
First of all, you live as a foreigner in Thailand, and it is not too much for us if we have an accident here and turn it as you want, we are always the peanut anyway.
So imagine: living in Thailand as a foreigner, and then having an accident in another country with all the consequences.
Car seized, pre-trial detention coupled with huge bails etc.
No, I can't think about it and wouldn't run this risk.
And don't say it won't happen to me.
As you know, you can go anywhere in Asia for a piece of cake.
But I leave it to your own wisdom and common sense.
    Greetings, Gino

I have been living in Thailand for 14 years and have had two accidents in my right. Everything was handled neatly with the insurance. My neighbor, also a farang, had an accident last month, his insurance duly reimbursed the other party. You always run a risk... even when you cross the street or go to the market, a gas bottle can explode! If you think this way, it is better to stay indoors and never go out. Last year I did a 2 km car tour with friends from North Thailand - Laos to the Chinese border and back via Nong Khai. What many farangs have never seen, we have seen thanks to our own initiative. With your own car you can drive where you want and stop where you want and for however long. I also drove around in Ho Chi Ming (Saigon) Vietnam for 3500 months with a purchased moped. Where I also saw many things where the farang never comes. But always drive safely!
I will definitely do Cambodia with my own car in a responsible, safe manner because if I get on the bus to Cambodia tomorrow and it drives into the ravine (which often happens!) it will be over. By the way, I don't have the bus driver's steering wheel in my own hands, but I do have that of my car.
Either you choose the safest option … 'Staying at home with mom on the sofa'

I agree with Gino's advice. Add to that the fact that I myself have crossed large parts of Thailand (including Bangkok) many times by car. I also went to Laos from Thailand by car, had to take out a separate insurance policy. But, apart from the risks mentioned by Gino above, I wouldn't even think about driving a car in Cambodia myself. In my opinion the traffic here is really one big chaos. My unsolicited advice to you is to rent a car with a driver locally. The costs are relatively low, the driver knows the way and local customs and it prevents you from getting into major problems. Have a nice and safe trip!

We lived in Cambodia for 2 years. We came to Thailand with our car. We were not told how to do that here either. Insuring a car in Cambodia is only possible for a number of years. Didn't exist at all. In the end we were insured, but then you had to have a home address with a whole regiment of forms. So not really easy.
Good luck. Maybe try without papers? But watch out. It is very dangerous to drive there if you don't know the style of Cambodian driving. They drive on the right as in NL. Despite the rules, they have no rules. We finally did
