Dear readers,

I make videos on YouTube about cities in Thailand and what there is to do for tourists. I do know a bit about Thai cities and their history. But I also want to know what makes a city or village so attractive. Why do Dutch or Belgians choose to live in a certain city?

I would like to know more about the story behind the city. Can you tell me?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Regards,

Raymond

    Dear Raymond,

    I think you shouldn't see everything under one heading.
    The choice I made, for example, was made in consultation with my Thai/Dutch wife.

    Where she feels most comfortable, I have partly adapted myself. The circle of acquaintances and family is very important to the average Thai and they therefore want to stay close to each other.

    Whether the city is culturally attractive or important is then of secondary importance. In addition, I am not a pioneer and hermit who has his home where he lies down. There has to be something to do and the beach is definitely a condition for my peace of mind. In addition, a certain degree of luxury must be possible (Western oriented) because, among other things, you don't see me walking around with gas lamps.

    For me, Pattaya is the most attractive city to live in Thailand.

    Benefits:
    1. Easily accessible from Bangkok (airport) vv;
    2. Pleasantly priced, apartment can be rented from 3000 per month, I usually choose an apartment for about 8000-10000 baht because I prefer a bit more luxury;
    3. Life is sabai sabai in Pattaya with an easily accessible beach, all comforts in shops, supermarkets, malls, cinemas and all western conveniences if you wish;
    4. You can make it as expensive or cheap as you want, from 30 baht you already have a Thai meal;
    5. The Thai East Coast has many nice places to retreat and enjoy more peace or an island.

    Cons:
    1. Almost all Thai see you as a walking wallet;
    2. Pattaya is very corrupt, as a farang it is better not to get involved in child exploitation, drug solicitation, etc. because it will turn hard against you. The police are not exactly your best friend, that is probably not the case anywhere in ZOA.

    Choice of place of residence based on proximity to:
    1. beach and sea, partly because it is often a bit cooler there,
    2. good health care facilities at a relatively short distance,
    3. broadly oriented society, landscape and business, good middle class and DIY shops,
    4.relatively close to international airport,
    5. rural outlying area with local suppliers for basic necessities,
    The culture of the place of residence as such is not that important, it can be reached with some willingness to travel.

    The expat who is not tied to his Thai relationship will usually look for a city or place where he/she can stay in touch with other farangs, the latter usually being the reason not to become isolated if there is no or insufficient language knowledge. If the latter can take place in a naturally beautiful environment, where culture, entertainment and good shopping opportunities are also offered, it is of course optimal. The people who live in a Thai relationship are often dependent on the origin of their relationship, and this is usually in the immediate vicinity of their family. If you, as an expat, do not speak Thai and do not have the opportunity to quickly get in touch with other expats, many will notice that their world is becoming smaller and smaller, with exceptions for those who like to be alone and social contacts are no longer possible. need to feel happy. Many men who previously lived in Europe with their Thai wife, and usually received a lot of attention from this woman, and also did a lot together, suddenly find themselves in a different league in Thailand. The woman is now not only dependent on her husband in terms of relationships, and can increasingly be found in the environment of her family, something that many farangs had imagined differently before immigration. Many farangs are also not used to being confronted with their partner's family on a daily basis, and the private part is becoming less and less. Now of course everyone has their own ideas, and it does not have to be exactly like that everywhere, but the possibility is very realistic that it is exactly like that, especially since I have heard this phenomenon from several people. That is why everyone has to see for themselves what kind of situation or environment they will personally feel happy in, and I would certainly not forget the above.

    Raijmond I actually did not choose to live in Isaan. I met my current wife somewhere else. When I first met in the village where my wife comes from, I decided to get rid of the idea as quickly as possible. But I am now happily married to her, and I must say the peace and quiet here in Isaan is wonderful. Nang Rong is a very beautiful city. Buriram is really perfect. there are few farrangs living here why they prefer Pattay etc. you know why let me spend my old age here with a beautiful starry sky and an area where the smile still exists
