Why is perfume so terribly expensive in Thailand?

Dear readers,

I usually bring some bottles of eau de toilette from the Netherlands for myself. When my favorite fragrance was gone, I decided to take a look at Central. I was shocked at the prices. In the Netherlands at Douglas I pay € 50 for a bottle of 54 ml BLEU DE CHANEL. At Central they asked € 125 for that! So I don't do that, I'm not crazy.

The question remains, why is there such a big difference? does anyone know?

Regards,

Johan

Supply and demand. Basic market principle. If only the happy few can afford it, the price is expensive. Now think the other way around. why does a “young papaya” favorite ingredient at Som tam cost almost 9 euros in the Netherlands and less than XNUMX euros on the market in Thailand. Well, you can figure out the rest yourself.

Dear Johan, the difference is in the excise duties that are levied on imported products.
This is also the case with wines, watches, etc. that come from abroad. Even certain medicines are included. Where else would the state get its money if you see that the average Thai does not pay taxes because they earn too little.

I understand that you have to pay import tax here in Thailand, but why do they make the local beers so expensive. Exactly most Thai people don't pay tax but they do drink. That's how the tax comes in anyway. That you pay twice as much here for a box of beer ala in the Netherlands, that treasury must be quite full.

Such items will have to be imported in my opinion. So you can count on hefty import duties and therefore a high retail price.

Oh well, and on every market you can buy almost all perfumes for the prices that a Thai can also pay.
It's just like branded custom clothing, you just have to specify the brand and it will be made for you. 😉

In the market, the blue chanel costs 350 baht and 3 for 1000 baht.
The scent is wonderful and does not dissipate within a few hours

Everything that Thailand imports is much, much more expensive than the domestic products, not only for perfumes.

    Dear Johan,

All products (dairy, meat, cars, perfumes, etc…) that are not produced in Thailand are subject to an import duty of between 200% and 300%.

    Greetings,

    Guido (Hua Hin)
