Flight Belgium – Bangkok – Ubon, what about the luggage?
Dear readers,
Recently, my wife and I moved from Chonburi to the Ubon Ratchathani region. At the end of next week my daughter will visit us for the first time in our new home. She will fly to Bangkok with THAI Airways and after a layover of 7 hours, continue with Thai Smile to Ubon. She will therefore have to check out for the first time and check in again, which is no problem.
However, she does not know whether her luggage will be automatically transferred to the next flight? Or will she have to take it off the belt and return it when checking in for the flight to Ubon?
Hopefully there are members who can give us the correct information, for which we are sincerely grateful.
Regards,
Bona (BE)
I would like to add that any further information or experience is most welcome. At the moment we are almost completely in the dark.
Our best thanks.
Bona and daughter.
Dear Bona, I live in Ban Dung, Udon Thani, and when transferring from Thai Airways to Smile in Bangkok we always have to collect our luggage ourselves and check in again at Th Smile. A few flights ago this caused a bit of a problem because my flight BRU - BKK was delayed and I could only check in later than the scheduled departure of the BKK - UTH flight. An entire team from Th Smile had already started looking for me to manually bring my luggage on board. Thai Air had apparently arranged for the plane to wait for me. A lot of angry looks when I boarded but I was very satisfied with the service…
Regards, Kurt
we live in Sawang near udon and have made this flight many times.
she just has to take her suitcase off the belt in Bangkok and go through customs.
then she can hand in her suitcase again after Udon Thani
I have never seen the suitcases of Europe being funneled through
experienced when leaving Udon with Thai airway the suitcases were put through after the flight Düsseldorf.
it's in Udon who's at the check-in desk
Thai Smile is a subsidiary of Thai airways. If you have booked both flights together under one file, the baggage will be automatically labeled at the check-in desk to the final destination. You can explicitly ask for this at check-in. Her luggage then automatically goes to Ubon. If the flights have been booked separately, you must hand in both E-tickets at the check-in desk. Even then, the luggage will be labeled until the final destination. Has been communicated to me by the office of Thai in Brussels. Have a nice trip. I am leaving for Phuket via Bangkok next Thursday. My luggage will also be labeled.
Normally she has to pick up the luggage in Bangkok and check it back in and put the luggage on the domestic flight, because Ubon is not an international airport like Chiang Mai or Pukhet. We also have to do this the same way when we go to Khon Kaen. But with 7 hours in between, this is all easily achievable. The advantage is that there are no customs formalities or baggage checks in Khon Kaen because it is a domestic flight. We keep asking again and again in Zaventem whether it wouldn't work, but unfortunately. So they can also check this again at the airport of departure.
Good trip!
In addition to my previous writing and writing from others, Ubon is not Udon. Pukhet can be forwarded directly because it is an international airport with customs services and baggage control. Ubon does not have those facilities and therefore you have to check in again. But in Zaventem they can check everything for you to be sure.
Dear BONA,
I also live in the Ubon area.
Your daughter will definitely have to collect her luggage and take it to the Thai Smile check-in desk.
Unfortunately, that is not automatic. Reason: she takes Thai Airways for the international connection and Thai Smile for the domestic flight.
So these are not 2 the same companies, despite being a subsidiary.
So waiting at the belt and taking it with you is the message.
Greetings!
Long Johnny
be equally annoying. two different companies is not important, only whether you have booked it separately, so paid separately or not. For example, if you fly to Chiang Mai, you have two routes, the first, for example, with KLM and the second with Bangkok Airways. If you have done the entire trip in one booking, so at klm your luggage CAN be labeled through to Chiang Mai. So pick you up in Chiang Mai.
But it's just a bit complicated so I won't describe it fully here. When and when not, but whether the second leg is flown with the same or a different airline is not important. See my example.
That does not apply to thai smile, I always fly with Eva and therefore cannot continue labeling
with thai smile and the reason is that thai smile is a charter company
And no scheduled flight.I was told this by both eva and thai smile.
Thai Smile operates scheduled services and is therefore not a charter company. The fact that you cannot 'label' from EVA to Thai Smile is because those companies have not concluded the necessary agreement. For example, EVA does have such an agreement with Bangkok Airways, but even then labeling will only take place if you have booked both flights on one ticket.
I don't think so if she bought two tickets. Only if you buy one ticket from one airline for different flights will your luggage be forwarded, otherwise not. But she does have enough time (7 hours).
Moreover, you stay in transit in Syvarnabhumi with one ticket so that you only have to go through immigration in Ubon. .and it is often hardly more expensive.
Dear Bona, perhaps you will find the right one among the many possible responses, but you must count on the fact that there are also some, which are mainly based on half-knowing and conjecture.
To be sure, just contact Thai Airways. (please see link below)

Hi,
I fly with klm to bangkok international (subv) direct from amsterdam.
Then with Thai Smile to Ubon Ratchathani (waiting time 1.30hXNUMX)
Baggage pick up call and check in again Thai Smile national same airport.
I'll let all the comments above speak for themselves. You only have the certainty at check-in. A label is attached there stating the final destination OF THE LUGGAGE.
A copy of that label will be attached to the back of your boarding pass.
So it is separate from your boarding passes.
Thank you very much for the wonderful responses. We can therefore assume, with a probability bordering on certainty, that she will have to collect the luggage from the belt and check it back in about five hours later. This is no problem.
I would like to take the opportunity to ask whether she will be able to use, whether or not she will be able to use it during this waiting period. Wi-Fi ? And how should she put this on board?
Never needed it before, but 7 hours is a very long wait.
Once again our sincere thanks to all.
Bona and daughter.
At the information desk they can show you where you have to register for your password, there are several reporting points, including at the gate of the national flights. You must identify yourself with your passport. You are entitled to an hour and a half of free Wi-Fi.
She can spend part of that waiting time, for example, on purchasing a SIM in the arrivals hall and exchanging Euros for Baht at the cheapest “Superrich” in the basement.
…. and a cheap bite to eat at 'Magic Food Point'. This Food Court can be found on the 1st floor (ground floor), in the corner at exit 'Gate 8' next to the counter of the bus to Pattaya/Jomtien.
My experience with Thai Airways is that you can be happy at all if your luggage goes on board. I only received my suitcase after more than 3 days, without any form of compensation. Sent several emails, but they refuse to grant me the compensation and even reply, so never again Thai Airways for me.
Murphy's law, no doubt. Never happened to me, thank God, despite 10s of flights with them.-
Never had any problems with my luggage with Thai Airways.
By the way, Thai Airways does not load the luggage itself but it is done by a baggage handler. If luggage is not with you, it is mainly their fault. They also work for other companies and if luggage is missing with Thai Airways, this will also happen with other companies.
And as for compensation. Once I noticed that someone had crashed into the aircraft with the loading stairs. Flight had to be postponed because the aircraft had to be checked for damage. Anyone who wanted this could be automatically transferred to the next day's flight or have their ticket refunded. I took the flight afterwards and also received a voucher of 700 Euro to use within the year. People could also submit any costs for hotels or transportation to and from the airport. Everything was handled legally and correctly.
Check the luggage tag at check-in, it shows the destination of your luggage. The luggage tag gives you security. And/or ask the person who does the check-in about the destination of the luggage at check-in.
Dear, what you should definitely take into account is the weight of your luggage. With Thai airways you can put 30 kilos in the suitcase, which is not allowed on some domestic flights and that entails costs.
With us, after the flight with Thai Airways, we always managed to continue flying with Thaismile for a domestic flight with 30 kilos, yes even last year with 40 kilos because we had an upgrade. We have never made a point of it. It's worth a try anyway.
It has little to do with the airline but more with the airport that is the final destination. If this is an “international airport”, so with immigration and baggage control, there is a chance that THAI will book the baggage through SMILE because it is a subsidiary company. If these facilities are not available at the final destination, the suitcase must be checked in from the conveyor belt in BKK and checked in again.
Our very best thanks to all who have been kind enough to give us good advice.
We are now equipped for everything.
Cordial greetings.
Bona and daughter.
