Reader question: Can you apply for an international driving license in the Netherlands from Thailand?
Dear readers,
Is it possible to apply for an international driving license in the Netherlands from Thailand?
Yours faithfully,
Rikie
No, you can't. You can only get it at the ANWB in the Netherlands. See the following links:
http://www.anwb.nl/auto/rijbewijs/het-rijbewijs/internationaal-rijbewijs
en
http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/rijbewijs/vraag-en-antwoord/wanneer-heb-ik-een-internationaal-rijbewijs-nodig.html
So you will have to get it yourself. I assume you want to do this in connection with getting the Thai driver's license? I think it takes much less effort to take a driving test or to “buy” the driver's license…., but I would go for the former. You lose almost the same amount of time.
Getting an international driver's license in the Netherlands is a piece of cake, but you have to be there first and in Thailand you will have to go to the relevant authority and pay the necessary money there.
In the Netherlands, the international driving license is issued by the ANWB. You can find this in most ANWB shops. Sir now comes the problem. You do not have to be present yourself for the provision. However, you must submit a valid Dutch driving license plus passport photo. If you are not in the Netherlands, any family can arrange this for you. You must then send your NL driving license and passport photo to NL. They can then make an int. Pick up your driver's license at the ANWB and then send it to you. You can't send a copy they want to see the original. This is to prevent people from an int. apply for a driver's license that is no longer valid. An international driving license is only valid in combination with the Dutch driving license.
No, applying for an international driving license directly from the ANWB will not work.
You can ask a family member, for example, to visit an ANWB shop and have the IRB buy it on the basis of a copy of your driving licence. The complication with this, however, is that the ANWB requires applicants who live abroad to have a Certificate of Authenticity for their driving licence, which you can obtain from the Embassy in Bangkok (against payment, of course!)
That Certificate of Authenticity is already sufficient for applying for a Thai driver's license, so in that case you don't even need the IRB.
I don't know for the Netherlands, so not for Belgium, you have to collect your international RB in the last municipality where you were registered, by the way an international RB, valid for 3 years, but only on the basis of a short visit, not as an expat
Their website says no….
http://www.anwb.nl/auto/rijbewijs/het-rijbewijs/internationaal-rijbewijs
…but you could ask whether it is possible with a written authorization. There is a telephone number.
I succeeded at the time, but with the help of someone with a general notary power of attorney, a recent passport photo and my valid driver's license.
An international driving license can only be purchased in the Netherlands through ANWB shops. Piece of cake: Submit your driver's license (original!), passport photo and you will be outside again within minutes.
From Thailand, the only option I see is that you send your driver's license and passport photo to someone you know in the Netherlands, who will then go to the store for you.
I would first call an ANWB shop to see if you don't have to appear in person, but I think this will run smoothly.
Actually a ridiculous exclusive right for the Dutch ANWB and expensive too: valid for 1 year for about 18.50 euros! They don't do anything else for it, it doesn't go into a database, not all of that. Why so expensive, so short valid and with a commercial organization..... why not just tap 18.50 extra at the municipality and then get a proof that is valid for as long as your Ned. Drivers license????
But yes, it has always been that way and it brings in the ANWB a few million a year….
In Belgium, even worse, only obtain it at the municipality. Price depends on the municipality. In my region everywhere 16 euros at my municipality again more NL 26 euros all for the same paper. The municipality only needs to staple a photo and enter a name. Why not a fixed unit price. Small municipalities only cost price? large cities again have to sell dearly for the same work.
I was once told by the Belgian ministry “Thais can exchange their driving license in Belgium, so Belgians in Thailand” They were well informed, not so. Have therefore done the theory exam, the tests and the practical exam in Cm. Actually a joke after 45 years of driving experience. And then you only get a temporary driver's license for one year. After let me drive. Can't get any more fines.
Completely agree, Pieter, but this is the Dutch way of tricking people. In that respect, Westerners are no better than the people elsewhere in the world they judge. Only the packaging is better in Europe.
Yesterday, for example, I was the only one among 10 Thais in Hua Hin to receive a verbal for a (otherwise unclear) traffic violation. Cost me 500 TB without receipt or 1000 TB with receipt. What do you think I chose? Am I better than that corrupt cop?
Dear Rickie.
Yes, you can, but requires some activity and a gemacgide. You cannot get that yourself in writing from Thailand. In case you also want to obtain a Thai driver's license, here's what you can do.
I obtained my international driving license from the Anwb by having an authorized person collect it in the Netherlands.
The authorized representative took to the Anwb shop:
My valid original driver's license from the Netherlands + a dated signed copy thereof.
A dated signed copy of my valid Dutch passport.
A dated and signed copy of the authorized person's Dutch passport.
To be on the safe side, the authorized person also took his or her original passport to the Anwb.
A dated signed authorization.
The amount of money, of course, was Euro 15,95 (May 2013).
A recent passport photo.
An International Driving License application form signed by the authorized representative.
A copy of my email to the Anwb Contact Center, Team Correspondence in The Hague, see below.
Within a few minutes, the representative with the international driving license was outside again and sent it to me.
PLEASE NOTE, some Anwb offices claim that you must appear in person for the application. That is NOT correct, an authorized representative can do this without further ado in accordance with the information that the Anwb Contact Center, Correspondence team in The Hague has confirmed to me by email. To be on the safe side, I also sent the authorized representative a copy of that email to the Anwb shop.
Contrary to what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in NL had told me, I was told that a legalized copy obtained from the last municipality of residence in NL, legalized by Buza, also legalized by the Thai Embassy in The Hague, of my Dutch driving license is sufficient. would be to obtain a Thai driver's license in Thailand.
However, the driving license office in Rayong gave nothing for that, the requirement was an International driving license. (may be different at other driving license offices in Thailand). If you have chosen the required simple route, then you only have to do a few tests and Riekie is ready
Indeed, the international driving license in Rayong immediately gave me a temporary Thai driving license for the valid categories on my international driving license for 1 year, easily renewable after 5 years.
Good luck and drive carefully.
Nico B
Got it on hand
Was already in Thailand when I found out that I had forgotten to arrange that
Original driver's license sent by registered mail to family in NL
They first went to the ANWB shop to explain things
With the driver's license a signed authorization was made for the family member who was going to get my international driver's license
+ the name of the lady he had spoken to in the store
All in all it took 4 weeks but now I have my driver's license back and yesterday I got my Thai driver's license.
Pieter is absolutely right. Due to circumstances it always turned out to be bad for me to have an int. Driving license. I occasionally had to get 3 a year. So after years I had a stack. Then I went to look at the numbers, the ANWB earns MILLIONS from them on an annual basis. Scandalous, in Belgium and Germany they are valid for 3 years. They also do not go into a database and the Thai police can therefore never verify it by PC, so it is actually a product that has no value. Shame on you ANWB
it's a big money grab an international driver's license for sale at the anw b.it's a cyclists union meerniet.my driver's license is already international there are still many foreign countries that are valid there.or am i seeing that wrong.
As Gringo said: Go to the Dutch embassy and have your driver's license legalized. Costs I think 1.100 or 1.300 baht. Then get proof of your home address at immigration. Cost 500 baht. Then to the office of transportation with these documents and your passport with valid visa and you get a Thai driver's license for 1 year. Cost 250 baht.
Driving license in Buri-Ram. Registered with a normal driver's license, confirmation from the local immigration service that you are staying or living there, doctor's certificate 100 Thb. Tests for a Thai driver's license, agility tests, examination for color blindness, then lessons on a computer in English, later the exam for the highway code about 2 x 2 hours. Practical test in the afternoon, failed, forgot to stick arm out of the window to confirm the test, practical test again the next day and 2 hours later Thai driver's license for 1 year ready-made in hand, total costs around 500 Thb. now extended after another doctor's certificate and agility tests (reaction ability and color blindness) new travel license validity for 5 years...I later obtained my moped license with an international driver's license in hand, but without exams...because I had my int. driving license could now be shown, 1 year later also extendable to 5 years (if you are good!!!) Greetings Buri - Ram.
