Reader question: Book train tickets from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Dear readers,
Would like to travel by night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on December 13. We land at Bangkok airport at 18 pm and would like to buy 1st class train tickets (reservation). Does anyone know how best to arrange the tickets? As it is about 30 km from the airport to the train station, I might be able to catch the 19.35pm train.
What can I do best? I wanted to book 12 asia go but then I come to a 1st class for 1 person and of course I would like to sit in the cabin with my wife. Can someone help me with some tips?
thanks in advance
tonnie
Dear Tony,
A nice plan, but you never manage to arrive at the train station in 1,5 hours after landing time. It already takes at least 1,5 hours from landing to get through Immigration and Custums. 1st class tickets are usually sold out a few months before the travel date because only 1st class carriages are used. Perhaps an option to book a connecting flight with a partner of the airline with which you fly to Bangkok? In that case, link both tickets together so that your luggage goes directly to the final destination. You do not have to go through Immigration and Customs in Bangkok. Very relaxed.
Have fun with your trip.
Gr. Rob.
Hi Tony.
Booked my train ticket last year and paid in advance via https://12go.asia/en works fine. Even got some money back because the train was slightly cheaper. You have to collect your ticket on the day itself in BKK opposite the station, which is easy to do. Have fun.
Jan.
Take a taxi to the station. Buy tickets at the counter and travel. It's that simple.
In December, even for 2nd class you have to book at least 1 week earlier. Just take a direct flight from Bangkok to Chiangmai. The train is a drama these days. You shake your bed. Can't have alcohol anymore. And usually delayed. And you don't see anything on the way.
And indeed . You will never manage to get from the airport to the station in an hour and a half.
And then we assume that your plane is not delayed.
I booked in 2013 through http://www.thailandtrainticket.com/
If I remember correctly I sent an email with my wishes, received an email back and then paid with VISA.
Good information and feedback via email.
The ticket was waiting for me on arrival at the hotel.
I believe you can also arrange for someone to be waiting for you at the station with the ticket.
I wouldn't bet that you can travel from landing at Suvarnabhumi to the station within an hour and a half. Your plane may be delayed or it may be very disappointing at Immigration.
Dear Tony,
If you land at 18.00 pm, it is better not to book a train at 19.35:030 pm. Before you have the suitcases you will soon be half an hour to an hour further. In addition, the plane must also land on time. In addition, it is very busy in Bangkok around that time. It won't be too bad on the highway, but as soon as you get close to the center you will definitely get stuck. It might be wiser to catch a train that leaves a little later. There are several trains. The BMAIR office is located opposite the train station in Bangkok. Dutch company. The telephone number in the Netherlands is 2252328-XNUMX. Also check out their website. http://www.bmair.nl. I have very good experiences with it. You can be sure that it is well arranged.
Another option is to fly to Chiang Mai with Air Asia. For the equivalent of € 25 pp you already have a ticket if you fly early. You then lose less time. I also took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai once. Instead of the planned 1 hours, it took us 11 hours (broken locomotive that was replaced by a very old locomotive). In addition, the trains there are often delayed by a few hours. Delays of 23 to 2 hours occur daily. I'd say get on the plane.
Have a great time in Chiang Mai!!
Regards,
Robbert
This is the website where you can find and book the information and tickets.

Good luck and happy holidays.
Anna
buy a ticket to Chiang Mai in the Netherlands. Then all luggage will also be labeled and you will travel a lot more relaxed. Processing is faster in CMX than in BKK
Hi Tony,
You have received a lot of information in the meantime, but…
Of course I don't know your program, but it is risky to want to go north the same day. An overnight stay in BKK after the long flight and taking the overnight train the next day is MUCH more relaxing. Even more relaxed is to book a flight to Chang Mai with Air Asia. Price is the same. Oh yes, BKK is a wonderful city with unlimited possibilities.
Enjoy your holiday
Rudi
It is impossible to catch the train at 19:35 PM if the plane lands at 18 PM. Completely impossible. You can be happy if you were able to leave the airport at 19:30 PM. You have to wait for bags + pass through immigration.
It is also almost impossible to find a ticket for class 1 in the station for the day itself. They are almost always sold out. The reason: a lot of those tickets are bought up by the travel agencies around the station. You can still find tickets there. However, they only sell these tickets there if you also book the hotel there. So selling. I don't know how many nights you need to book…
See the following video on the internet: http://vtm.be/axel-opgelicht/een-treinticket-kopen-in-bangkok-opgepast
Difference class 1 and class 2 :
Class 1 : you have a completely private compartment with 2 beds. You can close this yourself. So you have complete privacy. If you are alone, you have to book 2 tickets (2 beds). Otherwise, someone else could enter the compartment. I've already booked this 2 times alone and I had the compartment completely to myself each time (without booking 2 beds). That's why it's so strange that the tickets were sold out. So the reason is clear. See previous comment.
Class 2 : you have an open car (without compartments) with all beds on the side of the car. You can completely close your bed with a curtain. So you also have complete privacy here. The luggage is in the aisle of the carriage. I didn't quite trust that. I took my luggage with me on my bed.
