Tips for an intended holiday in September in Isaan

Dear readers,

We would like some tips about a planned holiday in September next. I am going with my girlfriend who originally comes from Loei and wants to explore the area with me.

Roughly, the idea is to stay in Khon Kaen for a few days, then rent a car and from there head north (Udon Thani, Nong Khai) then west to Lam Nam Nan National park and back again and east via highway 12. We give ourselves about 8 to 10 days for this tour. On the way we look for a hotel if necessary.

If there is enough time, then perhaps also a trip to Chang Mai, otherwise we will save that for a next trip.

Of course we need to rent a car. What should I take into account with car rental regarding insurance, etc.?

Are any readers familiar with the area and have any great tips? Are there perhaps readers living here who would like to meet a Dutch compatriot and show them the area? (we are expressly not looking for free nights or anything).

I'd like to hear about this.

Regards,

Henk

If I were you I would take a domestic flight from bangkok to udonthani, you can rent a car at the airport, if you go from udonthani to loei, take the route along the Mekhong River.
On this route you will encounter fantastic sights along the way, which are also indicated by signs, there is a temple with a sky walk, sang khom is a nice place to stop, you have many restaurants located on the river, from sang khom kan you can make a stop, in chain khan, nice place to stop for a while, if you go to loei from chain can you can also go to tha li beautiful surroundings and a bit through the mountains, if you stay in loei city, you can go to the saloon bar, Chris is the owner of this bar restaurant, and he can certainly tell you more about the area, it is actually a meeting point for motorbikers, but really nice, if you want to know more you can send me your send email, you can also speak by phone, before gr m

      Dear Peter,

I think this is the best for these people.
If these people want to go to Chang Mai by car from Nong Khai then they are
      driving for about two days.

This route is full of nice sights (especially in the mountains to Chang Mai).
I have driven this route several times and it is a surprise every time.

To now list what to do on the road becomes a long list.
One thing to point out is a natural park in the mountains to Chang Mai that has been constructed
by the sister of the new king.
In this park she teaches the population how to deal with new crops and rare plants
      and cherish flowers.
I forgot the name but this can be found quickly on the internet.

      Yours faithfully,

      Erwin

If I read your route correctly, you want to start in Khon Kaen and rent a car there; then north on the 2 to Udon Thani and Nongkhai, then west along the river to the town of Chiang Khan and then south to the town of Loei. What you really don't want to miss in terms of natural beauty is from Loei Stad the road 203 west and then south until you reach the 12. The city there is Lom Sak.

One option, if you have the time, is to take in the northwest corner of Chaiyaphum province; there is a huge nature reserve but the province is also beautiful if you go to Chaiyaphum City. From there you can head northeast back to Khon Kaen city.

This blog describes some beautiful places along the Mekong west of Nongkhai. In Nongkhai itself I can recommend your Mutmee guesthouse, on the river and in old style. They have a website. Nongkhai itself offers you the Sala Keew Ku (described in this blog) and the blanket temple Wat Phochai.

    Have fun!

Hi Eric Kuijpers. Are you Erik who lives in Nongkhai whom we met 15 years ago and visited Sarnelli together? I have been looking for him for several years…a Limburger.
