Reader Question: Where Can I Marry My Thai Boyfriend For Buddha?
Dear readers,
After knowing each other for five years and being in a relationship for 2,5 years, I asked my partner last week if he would like to marry me. Moved and somewhat moved (something that a Thai doesn't often show), he immediately said YES!
Two days later I asked him how we should set that in motion, to which he replied that marriage for two men is not possible in Thailand. He thought I wanted to marry him in the Netherlands.
No, I want to get married for Buddha here in Thailand, was my answer. According to him, that is not possible in Thailand either. After this we went to a befriended monk who blessed us with lots of water and flower petals and tied the same type of band around our right arm.
My question is where in (preferably) South Thailand we can get married for Buddha?
Thank you very much for your help, dear reader!
Martin
I'm sure you can get married in Thailand for buda
There were pictures of men getting married on the internet and party book
The Thai was almost always a ladyboy
But you were with a buda friend, can't he just arrange it for you
Congratulations in advance
Marrying only for Buddha is not regulated by law in Thailand, he doesn't show it that way but I think your friend is very disappointed now, he already saw it all, If you really love him, why don't you marry in The Netherlands !
Buddhist ceremony in the presence of some monks.
Beautiful chants and symbolic acts. Had to "feed" the monks.
Such a marriage has no marital value whatsoever.
Keep in mind that for Thai people getting married before Buddha is much more important than getting married before the law.
The less wealthy Thais almost only marry for Buddha. Therefore, the divorce rate in Thailand is the lowest in the world. Because only the richer and better educated Thai get married legally.
And it really isn't going to separate. Because that costs too much.
He just adds a Mia Noi. The people who marry before Buddha do not divorce. But just walk away.
In the community where your partner is part of and his parents give permission and a considerable dowry is on the table and there is a lavish feast for everyone with a generous reward for the WAT, it will certainly succeed. From my own experience. Congratulations.
First joy but later disappointment from your friend I can taste from your story and I can imagine that if you have asked him to marry you but still don't really want to get married.
As Guus remarks before, the supposed marriage before the Buddha does not amount to much and one can leave each other without consequences if one wants, all the more so because Thailand does not recognize same-sex marriage.
I also experienced a so-called "marriage" between 2 men in front of the Buddha, which, as you wrote yourself, was not much more than an extensive blessing.
I would say, "marry" him for the Buddha, throw a small party and then really marry him in the Netherlands, which doesn't have to cost anything. I'm sure considering what you wrote couldn't please him better.
Much happiness together.
Marrying 2 men, in Thailand, is not possible and will not happen. Not for the Amphur and not for the Bhudda.
In Thailand, two men cannot legally marry.
For Buddha, just about anything is possible in Thailand. I have known, and even attended, more than one wedding for Buddha between two men. It was usually about a Farang man and a Thai Ladyboy. This both in the South and in the Isarn. Of course, it has no legal basis or recognition whatsoever, just like a Buddhist marriage between a man and a woman. It's purely ceremonial, but it's possible.
