Learning Thai is still difficult

Dear readers,

I try everything. There is plenty of free content on the internet, Thai and Isaan. But what I'm actually looking for are Thai/Isaan spoken videos with NL or EN subtitles.

The idea is that you can watch such a video 20 or 50 times and understand a little more about the language.

Anyone a tip? A YouTube video maybe?

Regards,

Rene Chiangmai

Learning the Thai language takes a long time, a lot of frustration, a little musical talent and eventually it will look like something. The most common mistake is this: every course starts with the remark that Thai is a tonal language with 5 different tones. Many students then think “that will come later”. But it is essential that you focus on this from the start. Those videos would only be useful if you have mastered the basics. Study for an hour every day and take every opportunity to strike up a small conversation in Thai. If you can also learn to read the language, a world will open up for you.

Dear René, you recognize your situation.

On YouTube you will find the channel “Thai head” with funny short stories, set in the Isan countryside. Some videos are subtitled in English. The skits are in Thai and Lao. Further in the channel “Easy languages” you will find a few Thai street interviews with English subtitles.

    Have fun learning with this.

I have a good Thai teacher in CM, 2x p/week. We start the lesson with me telling a story about something in Thai, then reading/writing for half an hour and at the end she tells something in Thai. Works well. Furthermore, wherever you are, practice (shops, restaurant, massage), and listen even if you don't understand everything. I can already say quite a lot (maintain my vocab every day!), but listening and understanding in a conversation remains difficult. On YouTube: type 20 minutes of thai listening (or 30 or 45 minutes) is very good from ThaiPod101.com. Good luck

    Dear,

Depends on what you want to learn:
    – do you want to learn to speak?
    – do you want to learn to read?
    – do you want to learn how to write?

If you want to learn to speak, it is best to start with learning to speak the consonants and the sounds and then the words using phonetic writing. MP3 files on your smartphone are a handy tool for listening on the go (if you are on foot or using public transport). That's how I started, with the books and accompanying CDs from Paiboon.

Now I am learning to read myself… But that is another story…

    Good luck!
