Dear readers,

I have a question about visiting Northern Thailand in October. I've been to the north before and always had good weather, now I'm planning to go north again. From Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Due to circumstances I can only go in October, but now I read a lot that there is still a lot of rain then, do you perhaps know whether that is really the case or whether it is not too bad?

Regards,

Jan

Nothing as changeable as the weather, so yes it can freeze or thaw, in other words it can rain or be dry.
Yes October is definitely a rainy month, but it really does make a difference from year to year. For example, last year it rained here every month of the year, something I've never experienced here, there are always, normally, a few dry months. Now it hasn't rained since the beginning of December, which is "normal".
So don't let that stop you from a wonderful holiday here in the north, it really doesn't rain all day, or you must be unlucky.

Last year we went to the north of Thailand in mid-October, near Udon Thani and Nonghkai. We only had 3 rain in 1 weeks. However, I can't predict it for this year.

I would go , I live in Mae Rim and the weather in October is really not too bad , ie you can't have a rainy day for once, but usually that is short-lived and you have nice weather for the rest of the day. The advantage is that everything is still beautiful green and the waterfalls have a maximum flow.. So don't let that stop you from going.

This is in the travel brochure:
Although it can still rain heavily in the northeast of Thailand in October, the end of the rainy season is almost over. The temperatures are becoming more pleasant - less hot and stuffy - and the sun is coming out more often. Nature is beautifully green and lively, which makes it a nice month to explore this area.

This year in Chiang Rai we have not had any significant rain in October, and I think this will differ little from Chiang Mai.
Normally I think the months of October, November, December are the best months to stay somewhere in the North.
Someone who thinks that from Jan. gets better, must be very lucky that the so-called Burning Season does not start in mid-January, which can sometimes last well into the month of March.
I would rather have a shower of rain now and then, insofar as this is still often the case in October, when staying for months in a very unhealthy air, where not infrequently no (sun) and (mountains) can be seen from the smog .
To March it can occasionally get so hot that from Oct. until Jan. are still the best months to do something in the North.
PS. For the air quality, just look at Google on "Air pollution Chiang Mai today", then you know exactly what I mean.
