Home » Reader question » Thailand question: Looking for help with activating my DigiD from Thailand
Dear readers,
I have had DigiD for years. I log in with my username and password. Now all changes have been introduced. I tried to activate my current DigiD with the DigiD app without result.
On advice I asked for a new DigiD. I received a letter with an activation code and instructions on how to proceed. Unfortunately, this also did not yield the desired result.
Who can help me with this? Please name, telephone number and/or email address. Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Rob

Dear Rob,
it would be helpful if you mentioned where you live.
If there is someone who lives in your area and can help you, it all becomes a bit easier
Rob,
With my previous DigiD I could not activate the app because SMS was not activated. Requested and activated a new DigiD in a telephone conversation with the DigiD authority. My SMS is also activated and then the DigiD app works well. You will then need a mobile phone to log in to your computer, for example at the SVB

The easiest way is via video calling, you will be very well helped by a very patient employee of the Netherlands Worldwide, remember that when requesting an appointment via the online appointment system you enter 0031 as the country code of the Netherlands and not +31.
https://www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl/digid-buiten-nederland/activeringscode-videobellen
I have successfully applied for my new DigiD. Go after http://www.svb.nl/digid/aow
Received a confirmation that I can pick up my new DigiD within 30 days at one of the DigiD desks, which is of course ridiculous. I'm really not going to the Netherlands to collect this, but I'm now trying to have this done via authorization.
You have been offered a number of choices to receive your digiD.
Apparently you chose the wrong one.
DigiD activation code received via video calling
Collect DigiD activation code at a DigiD desk in the Netherlands
Collect DigiD activation code at a DigiD desk abroad (or Caribbean Netherlands)
But I also found it complicated.
The website is not very clear, but the people at Worldwide are very friendly, patient and helpful.
Too bad I ran into security in Windows 11 when making video calls.
After a lot of fiddling with settings, I finally had a picture, but no sound.
No problem, I was called and with my mobile phone (I don't have a smartphone, which seems to be a necessity of life these days) the digiD was activated.
Now I just have to try to find out whether you can log in to the tax authorities without a smartphone and without an application.
How crazy Jochen, request a new DigiD via the SVB, the activation code will be sent to your address in Thailand, and then you can use this code to activate the new DigiD.
If you live in Jomtien/Pattaya and/or want to come by, I'd like to help you.
I use the app several times a year for tax purposes + logging in to ABP pension fund.
[email protected]
Rob,
I've checked again. If you want to log in to e.g. SVB and do so with the DigiD app, you must also open the Digid app on your mobile. Because on the computer it asks for a code and you get it on your mobile. Then the computer shows a QR image. You have to scan this with your mobile and then you can go to the SVB. You have to make sure that after the code on your mobile you get a scanner when you continue.
It is really no easier than the DigiD where you only use username and password.
[email protected].
Please let me know your Line ID if you want to call.
regards Jacob
The DigiD helpline is now easy to reach. You can call from Thailand without it costing a lot of money. the people on the helpline are extremely helpful and really take their time. Had problems for a long time and didn't see a chance to solve them with like you now. Contact via the helpline provides step-by-step guidance and after two years finally my DigiD! Everything from Thailand. Doing!
I also have huge DigiD problems after that extra security. In fact, I haven't even been able to get an activation code yet. This is only possible via video calling. If you submit a request to make a video call, you will receive a desk code without which it is not possible to make a successful video call.
This counter code will be automatically sent to your mobile phone AND to your e-mail address after registration. In reality, I receive NOTHING on my mobile, nor on my email address.
“Yes, without a counter code we cannot help you.” is it called and also “It often happens that the code does not arrive.”
It's a misery and I've been working on it for days in vain. Advices are welcome.
Dear Eric,
Do you already have state pension? Then it is also possible to request a new DigiD with an activation code that will be sent to your address in Thailand.
A message was recently sent by the SVB with instructions, it was quite simple, you do need a mobile phone and you have to activate the SMS function, if you haven't already done so.
Dear Rudolph,
Thank you for your response. No, I don't have a state pension yet. I did indeed read somewhere that it is easier when you have to arrange your state pension. You don't have to make video calls then, I understood. At first video calling didn't work because I didn't use Firefox. It was nowhere stated that you have to use Firefox per se, so very handy again. Later I did use Firefox, but then again the counter code did not arrive, neither via email nor via SMS, when it should have been both. It's all terribly complicated with all kinds of codes and other numbers and if one cog doesn't work, nothing works. No alternative is offered either, for example manually e-mailing the counter code.
Perhaps filing a complaint with the Ombudsman is the best solution.
Indeed, it hasn't gotten any easier. I also helped someone and after 2 hours of tinkering we were able to make a video appointment. Unfortunately that didn't work either, so I called the help desk of the Netherlands worldwide again. Well, the response was every Friday that the appointment desk opens at 09.00 (we were busy on Saturday) and the appointment list was full!!!! Incomprehensible to me but good! It was also strange that the website stated that the new system will come into effect at the end of January, but we could not log in normally with our username and password before then. The helpdesk thought that was a pity and told us that the system had started earlier!!!!
What bothers me the most is this nonsense about extra security! I wonder what someone would like to do with my Digid username and password? There is no money to be made and only malicious parties could perhaps pass on other data to the SVB. I don't see the fun in that! It's taken a bit too far in my opinion (kinda like we're doing it for your health!)
@HenryN
Wonderful response! So I'm not alone with my frustrations. I also couldn't until after a month!!! (we're 'busy' - as if that's my problem) video calling again and then it didn't work again because I couldn't find the counter code (what's that good for besides all those other codes) neither on my mobile nor via email? !) had received, which was really up to them.
But no solution-oriented action from the helpdesk at all. Instead of “We will manually send you a counter code by email” it was “Just try it one more time”, so another month of waiting.
You used to have the program “Also dat still”. Naming and shaming is a better way to get something than asking nicely. But that is no longer possible.
Hello, that may be due to the foreign IP address. Try logging in via a PC/Mac that has a VPN connection to a ned server. Express vpn, Nord vpn, Windscribe., etc.
Perhaps that will work. But no guarantee, it could be another problem with your Digi D.
Hi Bob,
Log in on your mobile, enter your pin code, which you have provided yourself, then you will be asked if you need a pairing code, you say yes and you will receive a code. You have requested the tax authorities to log in on your computer, indicate that you want to log in, log in with DigiD, then you want to log in with the DigiD app, enter the login code you received on your mobile (4 letters), scan your computer with your mobile and you are logged in to your tax account.
Hopefully it works now.
Me Yak
Hi Rob,
I'm having the same problem and maybe you can help me if you know how to do it.
Greetings Johan

Requested a new digid D code through the SVB at the beginning of January. This was sent to Thailand by letter and arrived last Friday. Activate via the website Digid.nl and the tab "enter code". Then log in with your new login and password (you had to create these when you applied for your new digid D), and do what the site asks you to do, including SMS, scan and pairing code via your telephone. Only with phone is a bit difficult, but with the computer it's a piece of cake. I live in Korat tel 0649690718
(With this instruction, the process went smoothly. If you do not have an SMS check, you must request a new DigiD. For AOW pensioners, this can be done via the SVB.)
You apply for DigiD from abroad via the DigiD website. You can then collect an activation code by making a video call to Nederland Worldwide or at a DigiD desk in the Netherlands or abroad. With this code you activate your DigiD.
What do you need to apply for DigiD from abroad?
You live abroad.
You have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country in the European Economic Area (EEA). Click here for an overview of the countries in the EEA.
You are registered in the Register of Non-Residents (RNI).
You have a valid passport or identity card from an EEA country (note: a driver's license cannot be used).
You have a citizen service number (BSN).
You have a telephone (landline or mobile) with which you can receive text messages abroad and in the Netherlands.
You have an email address.
Applying for and activating DigiD is done in 4 steps:
Step 1: Make an appointment at a counter abroad
At many DigiD desks you have to make an appointment to come by. If you do this before you apply for DigiD, you can be sure that you will be able to get to the desk in time. Click here for an overview of counters abroad.
It is also possible to receive the activation code by video calling the Netherlands Worldwide. Then you do not have to travel to a counter. Click here for more information about video calling.
Step 2: Apply for a DigiD on the DigiD website
Go to the DigiD website and choose 'Apply or activate'.
Click on 'Application form DigiD'
During the application, choose 'I live outside the Netherlands'.
Enter your citizen service number, date of birth, nationality, document number of your passport or identity card and the validity date of this document. Click 'Next'.
Wait until DigiD has checked your details.
Do you receive the message 'You already have a DigiD' or 'Your DigiD has already been requested but not yet activated'? Then select 'Yes (continue with this request)'. Click 'Next'.
Create a username and password. Remember this information carefully.
Enter your phone number and email address.
Enter the SMS code received and the email verification code received.
Click on 'Apply'.
Step 3: Collect activation code at the counter
After you have applied for DigiD, you will receive a desk code by text message and by e-mail. With this counter code you can go to a DigiD counter within 30 days. There you will receive the activation code for DigiD.
What to bring to the counter:
The counter code
The passport or identity card of which you entered the document number during the application.
Your citizen service number
Step 4: Activate DigiD on the DigiD website
After you have collected the activation code at the desk, go to the DigiD website again.
Select 'Receive code'.
Click on 'Enter activation code'.
Now you can activate your DigiD.
You activate your DigiD with the activation code, your created username, password and telephone number. You can then log in with DigiD.
Can't come to a DigiD desk?
If you live abroad, you can also receive your activation code digitally by video calling the Netherlands Worldwide. For more information, visit the DigiD website or the 'Netherlands worldwide' website.
