Home » Reader question » Thailand reader question: Will the bank guarantee amount be reduced?
Dear readers,
According to my wife, in Thailand the guarantee amount is reduced by bank to 1.000.000 baht. Anyone know anything more about this? Would that mean that you have to spread over several banks if you own more?
Suppose you own 4.000.000 and the bank goes bankrupt, you lose 3.000.000.
Regards,
Henk

Just let them mess around. From me, the rate to the level of 15 years ago can be between 45 and 50 baht per euro. Has the advantage that more people exchange more euros. So you see again: every advantage has its disadvantage and vice versa.
And this is also important: Protection will only be provided to accounts in the baht currency.
What about if you live in the EU and have a $ bill?
from google
LATEST : In April 2020, an official of the Deposit Protection Agency announced that the period of coverage for 5 million Thai Baht, was EXTENDED TO 10 AUGUST 2021 (an additional year). It was announced indeed b the Deposit Protection Agency on 4 August 2021, that from 11 August 2021 onwards only sums up to 1 million Thai Baht (per bank) will enjoy deposit insurance protection.
The link is already there, so I don't have to give more.
The question is whether splitting into various accounts will hold.
Whether it is possible, because this logical step by the consumer could also have been foreseen.
Will they then look by name and not reimburse the other bills you have?
Do you have to split it up to various banks?
Wonder how the really rich will do then, just to name an example Prayut
Banks and governments, you can't trust them anymore.
With this rule already effective immediately on 01-08, what is going to happen? Will banks collapse, will there be a crisis in Asia? Do you need to withdraw your money quickly? Such a rule is not just plucked out of thin air.
Already 2 years ago the government decided to set the bank guarantee at 1 million in the near future. I think that was also discussed on Thailandblog, although I can't find it.
Here's the link, the whole discussion about this has been going on for over 5 years with a reduction from 50 million to 1 million. Perhaps some of the commenters could dig into the matter before blaming the current government, the baht or whatever.
As an expert layman, there is only 1 guideline that I follow and that is that I look at the profitability of the banks, after all, as long as the bank where you have deposited your money makes a profit and therefore has money left over, they do not use up their reserves. The National Bank requires them to maintain provisions for various items which affects profit, so as long as there is still profit and supervision from the National Bank I wouldn't worry too much, but it is always advisable to spread out with many assets.

Moderator: Please keep the discussion on topic and Thailand.

As I understand it is per account holder so having 5 accounts at the same bank should not be a problem if there is a balance of 4 million baht. As soon as it becomes per bank customer, then spreading it would be desirable, but it is not that far yet. In addition, I wonder if banks such as Bangkok Bank and Siam Commercial Bank will ever go bankrupt if there is a new Tom Yam Kung 2.0 crisis. come.
It is off topic, but the VAT rate has been set at 10%, but the 7% scheme has been extended annually for many years and that remains a nasty element that can be used to target certain target groups in the coming years.
I think the bank guarantee, after the adjustment, is 1.000.000 baht for all accounts together .. so spreading it makes no sense
The big banks will be stress resistant
Dear Henk
According to me it has been 1 million per account no for years. A senior manager of the Bangkok bank informed me of this
Money also for deposits rack, etc
So you can have many rack numbers
But memory abn about 12 years ago. I then also saw a maximum of 100000 euros per rack covered as a company
Gr Peter
This states what is covered and the account holder is therefore indeed a customer per bank. Spread to suffer less than that.

I wonder if it is an idea to have the Bahtjes on the account with (Transfer)Wise and only transfer them to a Thai Bank when needed.
It is also possible to have Euros (or dollars or whatever) in your account there and to exchange from there into Baht or to transfer to a Thai Bank in Baht (exchange with that transfer).
If the course (for us) changes for the better, life will become more pleasant, but perhaps the amounts of 800.000 or 400.000 Baht for a visa will be increased.
Everyone keeps watching coffee grounds at the moment.
"If the course (for us) changes for the better, life will become more pleasant, but perhaps the amounts of 800.000 or 400.000 Baht for a visa will be increased."
Where do you get that assumption from? Don't spread unnecessary nonsense if it is based on nothing, completely out of the blue.
I thought I read in a folder at Citi that this warranty does not apply to farang, only to Thai?
just today, August 6, it was announced that the guarantee amount has indeed been reduced!! So no speculation yes or no. It's a fact now.
