Thailand reader question: Problems withdrawing money via ATM
Dear readers,
Since about last month I have been having problems withdrawing cash from the ATMs in Thailand. My card is often declined and I have to try several ATMs before it works.
One time it will not work at (for example) Kasikorn bank, the next time it will. Even at the ATM of my own bank (SCB) sometimes it doesn't work and other times it does.
Has anyone else noticed this? And does anyone know what causes this?
Greetings,
Manouk

Since it sometimes works and sometimes fails at different ATMs, the problem seems to be in your card.
I would just request a new one, or first clean it with glassex.
Another possibility is of course that the money in the ATM has run out, I don't know if the ATM indicates that, I never use those devices.
Then please go to your bank branch at SCB and ask for a new card.
acc. It's your card
Have had the same problems
Try cleaning the magnetic part with a clean cloth
Maybe it helps, otherwise a new card
Order
A few years ago I also experienced this, which is no fun if you are urgently short of cash. I was then told that there were ATMs (then) that were not suitable to accept Maestro.
This has not so much to do with the specific Thai bank, nor the location. I also had a similar problem where ATMs from several banks were located together. I don't know if that is still the case, but I don't know how to panic if the pass is not accepted. Cards from two or more Dutch banks could reduce problems with the card itself, but not everyone has accounts with different Dutch banks.
Is there no message in English in the spirit of “cannot perform this transaction”?
I have experienced this several times and it means that there is not enough money in the ATM or not the correct bills for your amount.
Hi Manouk,
Because your card is sometimes accepted at other ATMs, it is obvious that your chip does not work properly in some ATMs. Just pay attention if it is an older ATM, this sometimes happens.
Applying for a replacement card is superfluous in my opinion.
This seems to me to be a correct solution in case you don't have 100 baht left for a new card.
Personally, I would quickly go to my relevant bank office for a new card.
It may also depend on the amount you want. SCB has 10,000 and 30,000 Baht in the machine as standard. If I push the 30,000 Baht I never get any money. Try again and then 10,000 always succeeds. And 2 times 10,000 also works.
With you, your withdrawal limit is probably still at 20,000 baht, which you can change to 30,000 baht yourself via the SCB app or go to your bank to have it changed.
Is it an old card with 4 digits as a pin code?
I've had the same problems. The one ATM does. But most don't.
Went to the bank and got a new card with 6 digits. No more problems
Many banks allow you to withdraw cash without using your card. You do need the app from your own bank and it only works with ATMs from your own bank. Good luck
Older ATM machines often still work on the basis of the magnetic stripe. Contains the same information as in the chip. But that magnetic strip causes problems with frequent use. So those old machines don't read a chip.
Max amount in Thailand is usually 20.000 Baht on a foreign card. 30.000 is a rare occurrence.
