Home » Reader question » Reader question: Is clothing for tall people also available in Thailand?
Dear readers,
I am going to Thailand for the second time this year. Am now planning to buy some clothes for myself: T-shirts and pants. Last time I couldn't pass well, so the question is where in Bangkok or Pattaya can I buy clothes? I'm 1.96 tall and often it doesn't fit. I understand that most Thai are not that big, but clothes are also sold to tourists, right?
Does anyone know where I can go?
With greeting,
Edwin
Have it made on the spot!
Bangkok Sukhumwit, around soi 7 to 11, many tailors, mostly Nepalese or people from India, here for generations, tailor make the most beautiful suits, jackets, trousers and shirts. Not expensive at all if you compare it to the prices in the Netherlands.
Then you have it the way you want it, choose your own fabric and cut, they also have wool stuff for the Dutch climate, and ready within 3 days. Pattaya and other major cities (Chiang Mai) also have tailors.
I had it done in Bangkok and I am still satisfied.
We had clothes with us to have copied and that was done perfectly. Commissioned by tailor at the Grand China Hotel, in the middle of Chinatown. Highly recommended.
What were the manufacturing costs? And how was the quality?
I am 1.92 m myself. You could take a look at the wholesale market around Bayoke in Pratunam area in Bangkok (near Indra hotel). There are many shops there, especially in the underground section, that also sell clothing in large sizes. I was able to buy good pants in my size there. And cheap!
With tailors you can be lucky or you can be very screwed. And if you are only here for a short time, it is difficult to recover if something is not right. As far as tailors are concerned, I have had very good experiences at C. Filippo in Thanya plaza 3rd floor (where many used golf items are sold) on Silom Road (BTS Sala Daeng station). But not cheap, but high quality. I would avoid the tailors in the tourist areas especially those where they stand outside recruiting customers or offering incredibly cheap 'package deals'.
simple: just have it measured at the tailor. There are thousands of them and negotiate a lot about the price.
On Sukhumvithroad in Bangkok there are plenty of stalls along the street that sell up to XXXL tshirts. Jeans normally no problem. I'm 1m92
Also for sale in the well-known department stores, just pay attention to the lengths for jeans.
My husband is not that tall but now also pay attention to what size. Just to be sure, fit.
In Asia the sizes are smaller than in America, also with shoes here size 39 Asia 46.
My experience is that a lot of standard outerwear is a few cm on the short side. (I'm 1,92 tall.) Then that's no problem. If you're tall and don't have a spoiler like Gerard Joling, 'regular' XL or XXL is quite difficult for the tall man. As Bas points out, near Bayoke Tower you have the best chance of finding something. But usually you get a lot of width in addition to length. Edwin will certainly have seen tailors in Thailand but they usually have a standard fabric list. But sometimes you want something different. Choosing from a stable is also more difficult than taking a quick look in a store, trying it on and quickly leaving.
