Reader question: Importing a scooter from Thailand to Belgium
Dear readers,
I would like to import a new 125 cc scooter from Thailand to Belgium. Does anyone know procedures to follow? What will it cost me and can I and may I drive that scooter in Belgium?
Which is cheapest, boat or plane? The same scooter here is at least 2500 euros cheaper and the model is identical.
With kind regards,
Jos
It is important whether it already has a type approval for the Netherlands.
If this is not present, do not start.
Transport by boat is the cheapest. About 30 days on the road.
Must then be in a combined container.
Then pay import duties and VAT.
These depend on the value of the motorcycle.
Just inquire at eg Kleve and zn. Based in Rotterdam.
They take care of everything and it is cheaper than arranging it yourself.
You will then receive it door to door. They have experience, and you know the total costs in advance.
If you do it yourself then it is difficult to calculate.
But again, check whether there is a type approval. And the right papers.
A friend of mine from Bruges also wanted to do this a few years ago, as he came to Thailand a few times a year, he first wanted to inquire in Belgium, and according to the information I have you cannot get a homologation number or document that mopeds or motorcycles must first be homologated. You can pay tax and insurance but may not take it on public roads, so far the info I have (maybe incorrect!)
Joe, I think you're mistaken. I don't think it will be more than 250 euros.
Own one of 110 cc Honda, and paid 935 euros.
Hello, in short, don't get started. I'll spare you the details. Gr.
Dear jos, something has already been written about this subject on the blog.
It seems to be that you come out about the same price, and it is a lot of hassle to,
Get / put the motorbike through the inspection / on license plate / etc etc,
Of course, there are also a lot of costs associated with this.
then the transport costs / import duties, etc. (I may forget something).
all in all, about the same price as in europe (belgium) for a similar bike.
I have read that several bloggers advise against it.
Ron.
Dear Josh.
Don't start with it, you will end up in a lot of trouble, and with a bit of luck you won't be allowed to take it on public roads and it will ultimately cost you more. DO NOT,,
Dear Jos, personally I don't think you can do anything about it. A luxury 125cc scooter from a
well-known brand eg.yamaha or honda costs about 2500 € in belgium. These costs in Thailand
+/-80 000 baht. import tax on new vehicles 20%. there goes your profit!
Warranty expires if you run the engine.
the one-off inspection will also cost you something.
For the inspection, the scooter must be equipped with a number of European parts (E number)
this concerns the indicators, headlight, taillight and the exhaust.
Then you also have problems finding parts in Belgium if there is a defect.
All things considered, I wouldn't start it.
