Dear readers,

We are going to Thailand for three weeks (family with teenagers in August). We want to start in Bangkok and continue to Chiang Mai (with stops in between) and then to Khao Sok. We want to rest the last 5 days on Koh Chang. Is that really impossible?

That's what I hear from travel companies. They advise against it because it is too far from each other.

With kind regards,

Sandra

If you are also going to do Koh Chang: Fly all distances instead of taking the much cheaper train or bus. Otherwise your holiday will feel too rushed. Or not that Koh Chang and compensate that with a luxury hotel in Chiang Mai. Better alternatives to Koh Chang are Koh Larn, Jomtiem, and Koh Samet. Picturesque Pattaya is nice if you want to experience something special.

    Hi,

I just came from five days of rest on Koh Chang. The journey to Koh Chang takes quite a long time no matter where you come from. But…. the island more than makes up for the long journey!

In your case I would advise to take an internal flight from Khao Sok Lake or to Trat or to Bangkok and then a mini van from the airport or from Victory monument. If you don't want to fly, it will indeed be a long drive from Khao Sok Lake.

Incidentally, Ko Tao and Ko Samui are also wonderful islands and a logistically a smarter solution from Khao Sok.

    Hi Sandra,

It is all doable if you take the plane to Trat.
You can always do the return journey with a minibus, according to us it took 6 hours to get to Bangkok airport.
Koh chang has something special ………”

As said, it is possible. But August is rainy season, but not on Samui. So that's a more logical and logistically better choice.

In my opinion, it is much better to go separately to Koh Chang and the surrounding area another time.
You have to compare it with I am in Paris and also want to visit the Wadden Islands for 5 days.
Koh Chang and its surroundings are best visited with a domestic flight to Trat.
There are more islands worth seeing in the vicinity of Koh Chang and you can easily fill three weeks with island hopping, so a separate trip to this area is better.

    Hi Sandra,

I just got back from Koh Chang and it's definitely a relaxed island. But it is not very accessible from Khao Sok. If you go to Khao Sok, I would go to one of the islands nearby. If you don't go to Khao Sok, you can fly to Trat from Chiang Mai. We did too. At 14.10 pm flight with Bangkok Airways, stopover in Bangkok and at 18 pm you are at the airport of Trat. There you will be taken directly to the ferry with a van and after half an hour you will be on Koh Chang!
    Good luck with your choice!

Koh Chang is about a 5-hour drive from Bangkok. If you want to rest, you could also choose Koh Samet, a 3-hour drive in the same direction as Koh Chang from Bangkok.

A good alternative is Hat Mae Ramphung. Located 10 km outside Rayong. Beach of 7 km long and overlooking Ko Samet. A 2-hour drive from BKK. Good place to rest. And conveniently located for fun excursions close by. No discos. A few bars, eateries, that's all.

In August it is the rainy season in Thailand, so it is better to go on holiday on the south side of the equator, Indonesia, where it is dry.

Trying to see so much of Thailand in 3 weeks of vacation is exhausting.
When you come home from such a trip, you are ready for a holiday!

5 days is a bit short, you spend a day to get there from Bangkok airport, and a day to get back. Tip: you can get there cheaply by bus from the airport.

To rest I wouldn't go to the tourist area that much further on, but 5 minutes to the right of the ferry I would book at least a few days at Villa Blue Safire from ordinary to exclusive there you also have a very nice (beautiful) private beach nice for and / without kids.

We spent a week on Ko Chang two years ago, rain all week! And not the occasional shower.
Advice in August not to Ko Chang.

Think ahead when planning about the rainy season, it's not just a shower !!!

At the time we went from Bangkok with a taxi van to Koh Chang. A few hours in the van, good to do. From Khao Sok it is a different story. You could travel to Surat Thani in the afternoon, catch the night train there, and then continue straight from Bangkok to Koh Chang early in the morning. If you go to Koh Chang, enjoy the sunset at 15 Palms.

However, I read above that Koh Chang is very rainy in August. So perhaps to choose an alternative destination?

From Khao Sok you can also be in Khao Lak in no time. This is located on the Andaman coast just above Phuket. There are many resorts right on the sea here. We noticed a lot of Scandinavian orientation. If you go this way, go on a day trip to the Similan Islands. You will hardly find more beautiful beaches.

Another option is to continue to Surat Thani and take the boat to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. I myself have no experience with Koh Samui, my girlfriend was disappointed. Koh Phangan is a wonderful island. Beautiful unspoiled nature, and plenty to do. Just make sure that you are not there during the full moon party, then it can be very busy on the island. Unless the teenagers are old enough already 😉 But even then there are more fun parties than full moon.
