Dear readers,

In September I will go to my girlfriend in Thailand again. The MVV visa has now been granted and so she will fly back to the Netherlands with me in October.

For this I plan to buy 2 cheap AMS-BKK-DUS tickets (Etihad). Before the departure of the outward flight, I will check in 2 people and I will neatly report at Schiphol that my partner will not make use of the outward journey, but will make use of the return journey. She's sick 😉

The advantage of this is that I have two airline tickets for less than € 900, that we fly with a reputable airline and that I can comfortably use 2 seats on the outward journey. After all, I paid for it.

The reason I do this is that a one way ticket with Etihad, or any other airline, is more expensive than a round trip AMS-BKK-DUS.

Does anybody have experience with this? What problems can I run into or is this a stupid idea?

Regards,

Ron

Not going to work, although I have no experience with Etihad. The rule is: you can skip the second leg of a ticket, but never the first.
Tried many times (KLM, MArtinair, Finnair, Scandinavian, etc etc) always failed.

Booking an empty seat is against airliner rules. Ghost tickets may not be used. Just read the ticket transport rules. You sign for that, otherwise you won't get your ticket. In practice it can mean that the entire ticket is cancelled, including the return flight journey for your girlfriend.

It could just be that your girlfriend has left for Thailand earlier due to circumstances, but would like to continue using the return journey… But do inquire with the company.
Incidentally, I see that a one-way ticket BKK AMS in September at etihad comes to 399 euros. To Dusseldorf is a lot more expensive than a return.
But then it should be an option to fly the last part of the journey separately…

She hasn't left before, but she's in Thailand. According to Ron, on the day of departure in AMS, she is (supposedly) ill and cannot start the journey. Logically, however, she has to go from AMS to BKK FIRST to be able to start the journey from BKK to AMS there, as Ron wants? That won't work, I think. See airliner destinations. A return must ALWAYS be started with the route mentioned FIRST.
But I think € 399 is a very good price for BKK to AMS or DUS. There I would immediately say YES and all difficulties are off the table?.

you can also try to book a ticket differently
so from bangkok to ams for you and your girlfriend
then you can try to get the return ticket from ams to bkk back through the company
    sometimes it works

I don't know where you live, but otherwise you can go with airberlin, which sells one-way tickets, and you can buy them in bangkok, then you travel via dusseldorf, you can look at the airberlin site, formerly known as the LTU

This will not work!! If you do not make the outward journey, the entire reservation will be canceled on the day of outward journey. What you can do is book a BKK – DUS – BKK and drop the return. It is not possible to request a refund for a route that has not been taken. Outward journey you MUST always fly, return journey not. (I am a travel agent).

    Hi Ron,

    Don't take the risk.

    You run into the lamp.
And the inconvenience always ends up unhappy.
They really leave you standing even if it's a year.

It used to be but that was a really long time ago
    sometimes done.

    Again don't do it.

    Yours faithfully,

    jhvd

You can get a return ticket back from the airline you are flying with, as it is refundable. I myself have experienced it twice: the 2st time, Singhapore – Bkk – Singhapore and interchangeable in Brussels. The 1nd time when I brought my 2st wife to Belgium with a ticket Bkk – Ams – Bkk with China Airlines, also exchanged the return ticket with China Airlines. Each time the cost of the ticket was refunded, but it must be refundable otherwise it won't work.

It will absolutely not work if you do not use the outward journey, the return flight will expire and you can buy a new ticket with the risk of not getting (buying) anymore.

A few years ago I knew of a case of a Thai woman who bought a single ticket with Thai Airways, Brus – Bkk to live permanently in Thailand. Before she could use the ticket, she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, fell into a coma and died some time afterwards. Well, through a friendly travel agent, that ticket was canceled and the money recovered. Normally, to my knowledge, the outward journey is not refundable, but the return is, provided (as I previously reported) the refundable has been purchased and only with the relevant airline.

I worked for years as an IATA employee at travel organizations and airlines, and have therefore regularly seen questions like this. As stated above, this will not work. In the event of a no-show on the 1st stretch, the airline will also cancel the other flights. So don't do it this way, because it will only cause you problems and extra costs.

Years ago, my wife's son came from Thailand to the Netherlands.
We solved this in the following way. (Singapore Airlines)
Booked two return tickets at a travel agency in the Netherlands with a one-way ticket BKK-AMS for my son, the ticket for my son was a reservation for a seat on the plane, finally with the reservation to the Singapore airlines office in BKK, here is the ticket collected and paid for so that he could come back to the Netherlands with us.
did have problems at the airport because customs did not know their way around the MVV and demanded that my son had to have a return flight to BKK.
After a lot of asking back and forth, we finally came to the Netherlands with a one-way ticket.

Thank you very much for your advices.
I'm not going to take the risk.
We have now bought a cheap return ticket for myself and a (relatively too expensive) one-way ticket for my girlfriend.

BKK to Dusseldorf via London with Jet Air for only 19.845 Baht single flight. on e.g. 10.09. That would be too expensive?
