Reader Question: Is life in Phuket expensive?

Hello dear people,

Who can tell me whether life in Phuket is expensive and whether it is easy to rent a house or apartment?

I still live in the Netherlands where I will soon have to undergo surgery for a tumor in my left knee as soon as my inflamed toes have healed. Fortunately, the tumor has not spread, and I will get a completely new knee in the LUMC in Leiden.

My house is only now for sale and when everything is over, do I want to emigrate to Thailand and perhaps to the beautiful Phuket? Or does anyone else know a good place to live and where it's not too expensive?

I myself was married to a Thai woman I met in the Netherlands for 15 years, until she ran off with an acquaintance! It has taken me several years to get over this. Have some knowledge of the Thai language, and have been there often enough to know my way around a bit. But I don't want to buy anything yet, just an apartment or a house for the time being?

What should I pay attention to, what exactly do I need and where can I get more information about my emigration? I have a UWV benefit an IVA and I can just take it with me. I have already informed the UWV beforehand. Can I or do I have to deregister here in the Netherlands, or is that not wise? It may take quite a while before I have sold my semi-detached house, but for the same money I will be rid of it in a month?

Hope I get some responses from you who have been living in Thailand for some time. Plan to do something to help build something for poor children or families who don't have the resources or the skills. The climate is good for my body, because if I have warm muscles, my osteoarthritis and hernias do not bother me or much less.

Waiting for your messages and advice.

BEST REGARDS

Jacks

Phuket is one of the most expensive places to live in Thailand, still cheaper than in the Netherlands.
But keep in mind that everything is a bit more expensive than in the rest of Thailand and many pieces ultimately make a reasonable amount, especially if you have to watch the money a bit.

Phuket isn't really cheap anymore. Certainly not in the tourist areas.
I understand that you are a bit older and therefore advise you not to buy anything.
I have been living here in Thailand for over 5 years now and will be glad that it is April 15 because then I will go back to the Netherlands for a while, Thailand is nice for a holiday or to spend the winter, but to live here full time, you have to do a lot can swallow. It really doesn't get any more fun here! My advice is to rent out your house in the Netherlands for a good price and try it for a while first! Rooms for rent here from 100 euros per month to ……. It's just what kind of luxury you want!

    Succes

    Hey Jack.
My deepest sympathy for your health and all the best in the sale of your property.
    Regarding your question about Phuket:
Since you were married to a Thai woman for 15 years, have been to Thailand many times, speak some Thai and know your way around, I dare to assume that you know the basic rule?
Where rice is expensive > life is expensive !!!
So just look at the price of rice in Phuket and you will know enough.
    Another pleasant life.
    Didit.

As advice I can give you, go an Apt. or Rent a house and then look further at your leisure. There are plenty of options on Phuket. Writing out from Ned. has advantages, including tax but also disadvantages, eg your health insurance expires. So you have to insure yourself privately, which means exclusions, eg your knee.
I would think very carefully about that!

I live in Phuket now for 5 years.
Life here is expensive and comparable to the Netherlands.
If you want to live like a Thai then it's not too bad,
but you just have to want it and like it.
Enough to rent here for about 20 bath per month.
Cheaper and much more expensive too.
I would not unsubscribe in NL and first for 3-6 months
rent something here and see if you like it.

I have a question and an advice,
Why do you want to live in that expensive Phuket?
It is very nice to live in the isaan, korat eg, you can rent a room here for 2000 bath per month, 1000 bath electricity, 400 bath water, and 900 bath for internet. Buy a scooter and you can go wherever you want.
There are many rubber plantations between Kon Kaen and Sakhon Nakhon, you can live even cheaper there, there are also many single women over 50, you have a relationship very quickly there.
As Barry says, rent out your house in NL and just try it, if it doesn't work you can always go back, I will too,
Don't make too many demands and you'll get there!
    Success !

    Dear Jack,

Your question seems a bit rushed to me, I think you'd rather leave the Netherlands today than tomorrow, I can deduce that a bit from your question.
Because what I don't understand very well is that you first say you want to emigrate to Thailand when everything is over, and then you say my house can also be sold in a month, do you mean that as soon as your house is sold you want to to go?
If I were you, I wouldn't immediately burn all bridges behind me, because I assume that you will also regularly have to return to the Netherlands for a check-up in the hospital, because of your health?
Take it easy is my advice, take a look at all the options at your leisure, Hua Hin is one example, one of those options is also a very nice place to live and expats from the Netherlands are also located in this place, because even if you speak too language a bit two know more than one, it's always nice when you have something to fall back on someone.
You also indicate that you want to build something with poor children or families, which I really do
a noble pursuit, there are also plenty of opportunities in Hua hin for this.
In any case, wish you a lot of wisdom, good luck with your operation and get well soon, hopefully you will let us here at the TB know what your final choice has become.
    greeting

I wonder if, with all your ailments, it is wise to emigrate to Thailand.
You will have to deal with very expensive health insurance in the Netherlands, or many excluded ailments in Thailand.
You are usually not insured for the ailments that you already have if you want to take out insurance.
