Dear readers,

I'm going to visit my family in Thailand again in July and I think it would be nice to take some bottles of Dutch beer with me as a souvenir. Now I wonder which Dutch brand(s) can be compared to Leo Bier, since that is my family's favorite brand.

I'm not a beer drinker myself so I really have no idea and Google doesn't help me either.

Thanks for your comment!

Greetings,

Lalita

Hello in Laos you can buy Bavaria Beer so I think the Thai sometimes tastes that.
I drink beer in moderation, of course, but Bavaria Beer looks a bit like Leo, I think.
And I'm from Brabant so Bavaria is tasty haha and the PSV football players also thought that on Monday at Stadshuisplein.

If Leo is their favorite beer and you want a similar type, you don't have to bring anything. You want to bring beer with the same taste, so that is carrying water to the sea, if you want to surprise them with some bottles of beer, bring some exclusive types such as a kriek, a lambic, trappist or whatever.
Then they can enjoy something that is not for sale here for an evening .

These are also for sale there. I have already seen them in Hua Hin and in Pattaya. More expensive though.

I agree with Henk's advice to surprise them with a different taste, and I am also thinking of a Grand Crue beer from, for example, Hoegaarden. Many of these beers are also for sale in Thailand. Think of Foodland in Pattaya with its extensive beer collection and also Friendship and Villa Market. Saves you having to carry the risk of breakage from the Netherlands.

    Dear Lalita!
I don't pretend to be a connoisseur, but I do enjoy a normal beer every day. In Thailand I always drank Chang, until last year the recipe was changed. I then switched to Leo, so I already know that pretty well. Here in NL I drink the cheap, but excellent Schultenbrau beer from Aldi. That compares well with Leo. I drink from a can, but I believe it is also available in bottles and I recommend taking bottles because Schultenbrau's cans crack quite easily. But our normal national beers Heineken, Amstel and Grolsch are also excellent alternatives. NO special beers such as white beer, etc
Have a good trip and have fun!

Heineken beer is a favorite with the Thai and is widely available there.

Doesn't matter, because LEO beer cannot be compared to Dutch beer.
It is also to let them taste different beer.
You could also bring spring buck or beer in higher alcohol %. There are so many beers. and generally drinkable, better than Leo I think. But that's western attitude.
    Just pick a beer.
I also hope it will be accepted, as in cultures a gift can sometimes be seen as an insult. I don't know about the Thai situation.

Be aware that beer contains CO2 and you can expect some shaking in your suitcase. Before you start breaking them, be sure to cool them first and then again. And hope it doesn't blow out.
Wouldn't take bottles either, 1) heavy 2) fragile. So rather cans.
I also don't know if you want to buy them in a store or Schiphol (if they are for sale there). From the store you MUST put them in the suitcase, from Schiphol it is in a sealed bag and you can take it with you as hand luggage. Otherwise you will lose your cans when you want to take them with you as hand luggage.

Of course there is also a restriction in terms of export of the drink. You could fit a little more in your suitcase. Although I don't know how the detection of the suitcases reacts to this on the metal of the cans and alarm bells are ringing.?? After all, there are more metal objects in the suitcase.

    Heineken.

very bad idea, you can buy a bottle or can and even a tap of Heineken everywhere in Thailand.
And how much do you want to bring. It's alcohol. Take a good look.
And cans can shatter in the plane due to fluctuations in temperature difference.
And the beer in Thailand is at least as tasty as Dutch
beer, maybe (I think) even better.
I would look for something else. You can't buy licorice (hihi)

      Drop they find dirty haha…
Last year I brought some bottles of Thai beer to NL (in the suitcase) and that went well.
So it will be fine! 😉

Just to supplement Henk ...... all the beers he mentions that are not available here are on the shelves at foodland, expensive, but tasty.

I live in Thailand and I know that if a Thai drinks Leo then that's it, the same goes for Chang drinkers. There are many other brands available here, but you shouldn't touch them, at least where I live, if you want to surprise them, bring a few bottles of "Haerlemsch Winter", I think that will certainly make them happy, but be careful not to give them too much!!

    Heineken beer brewed
    in the Netherlands and Thailand
    has a heavenly difference
    in taste and quality.

  11. Hans says up

    I completely agree with Hank.
Bring something to surprise them with.
Leo or something similar can be found in abundance in Thailand. Nowadays, even Hoegaarden is available on tap in many places.
Bring a special beer or just a bottle of good whiskey. The lucky warrior can then show off this to the rest of the community.

A friend of mine once brought swing-top bottles of grolsch was a success, the thai family loved it, bottles were simply and they can reuse these bottles.

We as real Achterhoekers also regularly take beer to Thailand.
The half liters of Grolsch (silencers) are doing very well for both the Thai and the expat!
After all, real beer kump uut Grolle!

Heineken claims high and low that ALL their beer tastes the same all over the world

Hello Lalita, If you buy the beer in the Netherlands, it must be put in the suitcase. Take a look at the See Buy Fly website to see what they have or send an email with your question. Advantage it then goes as hand luggage.
Will be a bit more expensive but no mess possibly in the trunk. Please note that the tin turns black when it goes through the scan, just like crystal and silver.

  16. Rianne says up

    Hi Lalita,

I don't know where you live, but maybe there is a brewery near where you live.
What could be more fun to take a beer with you that is brewed in your own hometown, for example.
