Dear readers,

I have a question about sending medicines from the Netherlands to Thailand. A good acquaintance of mine is currently staying (longer than planned) in Thailand and needs new antidepressants within a reasonably short time (5 weeks).

His GP in the Netherlands is willing to provide him with pills for three months, but the question now is how he will get those medicines in Thailand.

Is it wise to simply have the medicines delivered by EMS (registered) or is there a risk involved? I would like to receive advice on the best shipping method.

Many thanks in advance!

First check whether those pills are not available in Thailand; Thai pharma is at a high level. There is also a good chance that the mail will be intercepted and will only be allowed through for a month. If those pills are banned in Thailand, problems will arise, so do proper research first is my advice.

      I complete my message:

This is a website of the Thai embassy in Stockholm with good links to banned medicines in Thailand. http://www.thaiembassy.se/tourism/restricted-medicine. If it contains items that are on the prohibited list, a prison sentence of 25 years is quite normal. So first research the composition of that stuff.

It also states that transmitting is allowed for a maximum of one month.

I would have the medicines delivered by courier.
They probably also have the best contacts with customs, because they probably want to know what those pills are.

It is of course also the question whether those medicines are allowed in Thailand, otherwise it is better not to send them.

But has your acquaintance already gone to the doctor in Thailand?
Also in Thailand they have doctors and medicines.
It seems unlikely to me that the necessary medicines (or a substitute) are not available in Thailand.

    send by regular mail
I regularly receive medicines from the Netherlands,
    never had a problem

    advice is, however

the package should not look too official,
just have family or friends send it.
    good luck!

If the medicine happens to be Trazolan 100 Mg… I still have 1,5 boxes available: luckily I don't have to use it anymore. Expiration date is January 2021. Available for free…

    Many thanks for the responses!

Felix, it's not Trazolan, thanks for the offer anyway!

Cor, I am very hesitant because I suspect that his medication could be mistaken for an illegal substance (which it is not by the way).

Ruud, a courier also seems a good option, although the question remains whether these pills specially formulated for him are allowed in Thailand.

Erik, I will pass on your advice to my acquaintance. He has already searched, but so far without results.

    Thanks again,

    Rob

All medications, including psychotropic drugs, are available in the pharmacies of the larger hospitals, wherever you are. If the GP writes a (repeat) prescription, it is also possible to contact the Dutch health insurance company of the person concerned. It will not be about the costs: deductible and personal contribution do not make it cheaper in the Netherlands.

Ask the pharmacist. A few years ago my stay in Thailand ended a bit longer than planned. The pharmacist made sure that the medicines were sent to my Thai residence.

You show your medicine passport in a Thai hospital. They take you to a specialist who prescribes the medicines. It is an expensive joke. Surely you are insured in the Netherlands.. Then you will be reimbursed in the Netherlands. however, not to a doctor, but directly to a pharmacy, you will not be reimbursed. Unfortunately from my own experience. Good luck

Send by regular mail, registered and in several shipments for days in a row. Then it will work. But not with courier services because they go through the scanner at customs anyway. Good luck.

anti depressants are prohibited substances in Thailand. Make sure that a medicine passport is included and have it sent to you per month in a "letterbox" box, from Holland. I have been doing this for years and have had no problems.

Visit the Pharmacy, where I can get exactly the same medicines as in the Netherlands and much cheaper. Good luck that will work!

Medicines from the Netherlands to Thailand by regular mail, get them here without any problems, just fill in a CN23 form, are available at the postal agencies, fill in and the postal officer confirms it, usually have them here 9 days after postmark from NL.
    success

Last month I sent 12 strips of Paracetamol by DHL (urgent) to a Thai address. Intercepted at customs. Not allowed and sent back (never heard from again).

Paracetamol? That is for sale on every street corner (7-Eleven or Familymarkt). Then you might as well send a bale of rice to Thailand.

      • erik says up

100 Tablets of 500 mg paracetamol cost, don't be alarmed, 25 baht, say 70 cents for a box of 100. You can't send it for that.

For the rest, keep in mind that some things are always prohibited even with a medicine passport, some things are prohibited unless ... , and things are allowed for a maximum of one month of use.

I refer to the website given by me.

I use insulin from a brand and type that is rarely used in Thailand. Ordered from the Pharmacy here in our small village on the outskirts of Isaan, delivered within 3 days and cheaper than in the Netherlands

I have no experience with anti depressants, but you can buy most medicines at the "pharmacy" without a doctor's statement, often cheaper.
