Reader question: What nationality will our child have?

Dear readers,

I am Dutch, my wife is from Laos. We live in Thailand. Our baby will be born in two months. What about nationality? Does the child automatically acquire the mother's nationality? And what if I would like our child to acquire Dutch nationality?

Regards,

Walter

    Dear Walter,

My wife is from Cambodia, and we also lived in Thailand when my son was born. The Thai hospital issues a birth certificate, with which you have to go to Amphur for registration. To give the child the Laotian or Dutch nationality, you must be at the respective embassies to register it. Remember that you have all the necessary (and translated!!) documents with you, such as marriage certificate, birth certificate, passports, etc. For details: see the website of the Embassy.

Incidentally, you can already recognize the unborn fetus at the embassy: the child will then automatically be a Dutch citizen at birth.

No, recognizing the latter, unborn fruit, has not been possible for years.

Here's your answer, your child can get both nationalities if you want. Make sure you have all the papers. After giving birth to the town hall, instead of giving birth with the papers from the hospital, they will put the nationality of the father on the papers. You take this document to a recognized translation office, and then have the papers legalized. Ask for two sets, your wife can then register the child in Laos and also apply for a passport there. My wife is philipino and was able to do this at the embassy in bangkok. We Dutch, unfortunately have to go to The Hague to register a birth, this is not done at the embassy in Bangkok. Contrary to a number of years ago, the child will no longer be given Thai nationality. It does not have a visa requirement until the age of 15, and can simply participate in the vaccination program in the local hospital, costs about 150 baht per visit. My son is now 3, born in udon Thani, we live in Ban Dung.

      Day Lee
I live in Ban Pho, about half an hour's drive from Ban Dung. Always nice to speak Dutch, I'm Belgian. Sorry to contact you like this but it's always good to know people in this area with the same language.

      Dear Lee,

Can you explain the latter better; 'Unlike a few years ago, the child will no longer be given Thai nationality. It does not have a visa requirement until the age of 15'

In my opinion, you can simply apply for a Thai passport after registering your child in Thailand
      In The Hague.

      Yours faithfully,

      Erwin
