Reader question: What kind of animal is this?

Dear readers,

Now that there are no more tourists, animals appear that you otherwise never see. For example, this morning I found an ape-like cat/dog on the edge of the partition wall, apparently a result of one or more crosses?

The hind legs are monkey or dog-like, the striped tail and neck match, the head is like a dog? What animals are mixed in here?

Regards,

Henk

Hello Henk, this is not a crossing. This is a civet cat. Beautiful animals.

The civet is perhaps known from the famous 'most expensive coffee in the world', where the coffee beans are picked from the faeces of these animals.

Aceh, totally north Sumatra (where I live) is one of the major producers of this coffee. They produce tons of full buckets of it…

But probably won't go too animal-friendly. Think of battery cages, goose liver and bears kept in cages for their bile 🙁

So definitely not on my bucket list anymore! (Still daily coffee.)

I mean “neither daily coffee of course”.

In Indonesia, this coffee is called "kopi luwak", after the civet cat that is called luwak there. Because of its world fame, coffee has become an industry that produces only 500 kg per year. The animals used to roam freely, but now they are trapped in small cages, fed only coffee beans and biting themselves out of frustration. So it is really coffee with a smell to it.

Try to catch some of those cats and you have a nice coffee in the morning: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_loewak

It is very similar to the ring-tailed lemur. But I doubt because the second photo also shows such a fur drawing at the neck. Maybe you can search further with this.

Dear Henk, different animal species cannot fertilize each other. There are very rare exceptions to that rule. and if species cross at all, as a horse and an ass or a lion and a tiger, the offspring, the mule and the liger, are unable to reproduce themselves.

in the picture we indeed see the Civet cat.

I once ended up in Bali with quite decent company. There I got an opportunity to taste that Civet coffee. Unfortunately, the way of preparing coffee was a technique that resulted in an extremely weak coffee. So I was not impressed. We would have said ditch water at home. But the company thought that a Dutchman (a Blanda) must be a coffee connoisseur, so I was publicly asked how I found that civet coffee.
Well, it taste like shit! was my answer. It took at least 30 seconds of painfully offended silence before anyone got the joke. Only then was it laughed at.

Coffee beans are now also fed to elephants at some locations in Thailand. Chang Coffee is now produced there. Same story as the Civet coffee. Only the Civet cat in the wild is very picky and only eats the best beans. Chang eats everything.

Beautiful animal, by the way, that Civet cat.

Then they can also win that "kopi luwak" coffee here, although then "kopi siam" ...

I have seen in Indonesia that they can become very tame. So maybe you can start a coffee company. 🙂

Useful animals, eat many small insects such as millions of legs and centipedes.

Many thanks to all contributors. I learned a lot again. It does surprise me where that beast comes from: it is a busy tourist resort here, but now extinct - except for this exotic immigrant (I don't mean myself)!
