Dear readers,

My flight from Zaventem was delayed, so we were late for the flight from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok. Ethiad arranged for a hotel room in Abu Dhabi, nice of them. Too bad for us, a lost day.

Today I receive a message from Ethiad: ….it was never our intention to leave you feeling unhappy with the services provided. Therefore, as a gesture of goodwill, I would like to offer you and Mr…15,000 Etihad Guest miles each. These miles can be utilized towards future Etihad flights, and/or any of the 6,000+ rewards available in the Etihad Guest Reward Shop. I trust that you will accept them as an extension of our apology for your experience on this occasion. Please be advised that I have already credited your miles into your account.

Since we are not experienced travellers, my question is, how does it work? And how far do you get with these miles and is there a time limit?

Regards,

Judith

Yes I have too-without delay. you have to register first, then you get points on every flight, and with those points you can get a discount on other flights - you always pay the taxes etc yourself. you can also use them because of cooperation on BKK-air, for example. If you get enough in 1 year, your status increases and you are silver - then you can enter the lounge in advance, even if you fly econ. In AMS it is that of KLM, in BKK of THAI. And your luggage will be unloaded first as a priority.
They expire in 2 or 3 years, depending. of that status. For example, with 15000 you can book a single domestic flight on BKK-air. There are countless sites - all in English, about tips, advice, etc. For example, look at flyertalk.com, miles and points

Incidentally, in the event of such a delay, apart from food and accommodation, you are entitled to compensation of 600 euros under EU legislation (Regulation 261/2004) and the jurisprudence based on it.

      Cornelius,
      Thank you for your response.
After my complaint, (instead of arriving Bkk in the morning around 7 am, it was evening around 18 pm)
we have received the above message, a credit to miles, nothing about a financial compensation.
We had deliberately opted for a stopover, because we are not travelers, we thought it would be nice to stretch our legs about halfway.
But it turned out to be a hectic day, extra queuing at immigration, city to hotel …
we didn't have our suitcase…, you can't sleep…back to the airport, queuing again. In short, a tough day.

I have something similar going on with Emirates where I ended up arriving in BKK over 7 hours late. A claim is now being made via euclaim.nl, which works according to the 'no cure no pay' principle. If your claim is awarded – and this is fought to the highest courts – it will cost you a percentage of the awarded amount; if you lose, it costs you nothing.
Airlines would of course simply have to apply that legislation themselves, but non-European companies in particular have little appetite for it. Because the original flight started in the EU, it falls directly under that Regulation. It is clear from case law (previous court rulings) that the total delay to the final destination – and not just that between the EU airport and the place of stopover/transfer – must be taken into account. If it is more than 6 hours, you are entitled to 600 euros.

      Dear Cornelius,

Unfortunately this is incorrect. You will only be reimbursed if you fly with a European airline.
I have also flown once with Etihad. Also delay. Also hotels. Also holiday day to the cla…
Reimbursement not possible according to the above reason.

      • Cornelis says up

No Ad, the Regulation in question also expressly covers non-European airline flights departing from an EU airport. The fact that Etihad did not pay does not mean that it is justified. See also the jurisprudence I mentioned in previous responses.

        • ruud says up

The flight departed from the European airport was only 1 hour late.
I don't know if the European rules also apply to the missed connection in Abu Dhabi, because it concerns the same company or booking.

I have already had the same thing and after insisting I received my 600 euros. no response at first, then I would have found the e-mail address of the CEO ( [email protected] or senior guest service manager “Susan Elizabeth Clemson” [email protected] ) and I have to say that it didn't take long before it was all right.

      Jan,
Could it be that I have a letter wrong in the address?
Both give Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
      Nevertheless, thanks for your response.

        Judith,
My email dates from 2012, it is quite possible that the email addresses have been changed in the meantime

      • noah says up

No Judith, you didn't make a mistake. It's just a made up story about those email addresses.

Aubrey Tiedt is head of guest service and do you really think that a top CEO's email address is just on the street??? That man has other things to do than answer emails from some "customers".

But Jan, give the TB fellow bloggers a link to the email addresses and I'll be the first to apologize...

You will of course understand that I have first done extensive research into your information!

        • January says up

          Judith,
I don't know how Noah dares to make such comments. Give me your email address and I will forward 2 or more emails from March 2012 and October 2012 because one is about an incorrect billing when changing my return dates from Bangkok and the other email I sent on behalf of my sister-in-law regarding a delay of a flight from Brussels. I can't copy these emails here otherwise he will think I manipulated them. Sad little boy you are Noah.
And Noah, Mr Hogan did not answer that email herself but Mrs Clemsom who was then (2012) Senior manager guest service.

          • Judith says up

            Jan,
I managed to send a message to the email address of Jhogan "the CEO" :-)
My message will of course go to another service, but we'll wait and see.
Thank you to all who responded to my question.
I will keep you informed about the further progress!
            Regards

    Judith,

If you left Zaventem with a delay of more than 3 hours, you should check the Belgian website http://www.vlucht-vertraagd.be .
Based on a “no cure/no pay account” (and 25% of the total compensation amount in case of success), this law firm arranges all correspondence and contacts with airlines for a compensation claim of 600 euros.

    Succes
    Marc

    • Cornelis says up

Marc, the delay in departure is completely irrelevant, it is about the number of hours of delay on arrival at the final destination of the airline in question. From 3 – 6 o'clock it is 300 euros, above that it is 600 euros.

    • Judith says up

      Mark,
      thanks for your response.
It was about 1 hour late in Zaventem.
The plan was * arrival Abu Dhabi – 19:45 PM
      * departure Abu Dhabi – 21:45 pm
We thought that a 2-hour stopover was sufficient … because you can also book it this way.

      • RonnyLatPhrao says up

        Judith,

        Have a look here –
        http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_nl.htm

        Financial compensation
In addition, in the event of denied boarding, cancellation of the flight or arrival more than 3 hours later at the destination stated on your ticket, you may be entitled to compensation of 250 to 600 euros, depending on the flight distance.

In the Netherlands, a form can be found on the website of the “Inspectorate for the living environment and transport”. If you meet the conditions (sufficient delay, distance, flight to or from Europe) they will arrange the matter for you. Free!!!! Other eu countries probably have that too.
EUClaim does that too, but charges a decent commission.
For me they did and it was in my account within a month.
Airlines try to fob you off with miles or vouchers. Do not!!!

    • Cornelis says up

You can only call in the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate after your complaint or claim has been formally rejected by the relevant airline. See http://www.ilent.nl/Images/ILT%2E155%2E03%20-%20Klacht%20passagiersrechten%20luchtvaart_tcm334-328808.pdf

      • Martin says up

        That's right.
It is also important that you reject the offered miles or voucher

    Dear Judith,

I have been flying with Etihad several times a year back and forth between Brussels and Bangkok, Manila or Ho Chi Minh City for 7 years.
I registered as a frequent flyer via the site from the start, but there are also forms at check-in at the airport. You will immediately receive the miles you fly in your account where you can consult everything. As a newcomer, it is NOW a bit less interesting than in the beginning, in other words in the beginning you received 100% of the miles actually flown, now it depends on your status, frequent flyer, sliver, gold, gold elite and of course also on the class in which you book, economy, bussines, first class. Then it will take a while before you get into the silver class, you can find all that information on the site.

With those saved miles you can shop via the site, in other words buy something from the large range or upgrade from economy to business WITHOUT paying taxes yourself! If you actually want to buy a flight with it, you will probably have to pay the taxes yourself However, I have never done so, only upgrades. For example, an upgrade from Brussels to Abu Dhabi now costs just over 30.000 miles, previously it was 21.000.
In the beginning you could go to a beautiful lounge in Abu Dhabi, where there was a large hot and cold buffet, many alcoholic drinks and champagne, soft drinks and coffee. There was also a library and several Apple computers with large screens. You could also take a shower for free, there were several, so never wait. 3 weeks ago I was in Abu Dhabi in another renovated Al Raheem lounge and champagne has now also been abolished there, but sparkling wine is still available, hihi.
Once you have a gold card, you can take 40 kg of luggage with you, recently 48 kg, no problem, you can check in via business class and you will receive a fast track card, so no more queuing at immigration and baggage check.

    However, 3-4 years ago a lot of changes occurred;
*awarding of miles was greatly reduced (presumably enough regular customers already)
*access to that lounge was abolished, only for business class travelers, they opened another lounge, with only a few hot dishes, drinks remained the same, but no computers, WiFi and no more library. Only 1 single shower, so wait and hope that it will be your turn. As someone else already mentioned, you can go to the lounge of Brussels airlines in Brussels, in Bkk with Thai, in HCMC with Vietnam Air, in Manila with Philippineair. THai air is also very good, then Brussels airlines, but Vietnam Air and from a Philippine perspective it is very poor.
*The quality of the food on their flights is also a lot less and in the beginning Haagen Daz was served after the meal and they came around numerous times with the drinks cart, now you can still get something, but you have to ask yourself .

There are some other benefits such as more kg of luggage according to your card's preference.

All in all, I am still very satisfied with flying with Etihad, I have even flown their new routes over Bombay in collaboration with Etihad, over Serbia in collaboration with air Serbia, DON'T!
For me only Brussels, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, a pity about those few hours that you always lose, but yes, I have already had DVT 3 times and then I need some walking, otherwise I would have taken a direct flight.

Hopefully this is of some use to you.

    gr, patrick
