Dear readers,

With great pleasure I read the series on Secrets of Thai cuisine on your blog with delicious dishes. Now I have already made a list of dishes that I want to try. But…. where can i find all those dishes? I don't speak Thai and I have looked at a street stall but then it is not clear to me what they are making. When I ask in English I usually get a friendly smile but no answer.

I'm going back to Thailand in two weeks. A few days in Bangkok, then to Pattaya and Koh Chang.

So my question is where do I go for all those delicious dishes if you don't speak Thai or have a Thai girlfriend who knows the way?

Regards,

Geert

    Well, I have a study visa and go to school twice a week to learn Thai…hopefully this will help you…
    suppose you want pa taaj…

    Kothoot. mie pa taaj mai? -> Sorry do you have pa taaj?
    May me? Farang paaj naaj? -> don't you have? Where should this Westerner go?

    Saaj -> Left
    Kwaa – Right
    Long -> Backward
    After -> Forward
    Tjongpaaj -> Immer gerade aus.

    My motorbike taxi? -> Do you know a motorbike taxi?
    (And it will bring you)

    Enjoy your meal! 🙂

    Dear Geert,

    It is not that hard!
    Use your smartphone to take a photo of the dish depicted, and possibly a separate close-up photo of the Thai name of the dish (mentioned in the article!).
    You can show this in the restaurant or at the stall. Success guaranteed.

    NB: this is how my wife in the Netherlands used to do her shopping in the supermarket when she really couldn't find something. Photo of a pancake, and the text: pancake flour, show it to a shop assistant, and presto.

    If you want to know more about street food in Thailand and what you can eat where, be sure to check out Mark Wiens' videos on YouTube. I already got some nice tips from those videos

    1. Make a list in NL of the dishes you want to eat
    2. After arriving in Thailand, directly to a Beer Garden
    3. Discuss the list there with one of the ladies present

    Success assured

    Do you have google translator on your phone? There you can take a picture of the card and have it translated.
