Reader question: Marrying a Thai in Hong Kong?
Dear readers,
Just a few days from Bangkok to Hong Kong for a specific purpose. Marrying in Hong Kong would be legal in many home countries and thus easier than legalizing a non-European marriage in the “home front”…. but what exactly are the conditions, advantages and disadvantages to legalize in the home country (Belgium)?
Where is the best dish in Hong Kong and what documents should you bring? Which documents will you receive? Looking forward to answers from people with some experience…
Has anyone already married a Thai beauty in Hong Kong and was it indeed easier to “import” her to Belgium/the Netherlands and have the marriage declared legal?

I suspect that there may be fewer problems with the marriage itself, that Hong Kong may require fewer documents... but for what you call "importation"... I think the rules are the same, and ultimately assessed by the Aliens Department. is or is being investigated by other Belgian authorities......To obtain family reunification
Hello Serge,
to bring your Thai wife to Belgium, the procedure remains the same. The registration of your marriage also remains the same.
Only difference is that you get married in Hong Kong under the law that is valid in Hong Kong.
No idea what documents are required by Hong Kong law to get married there as a foreigner.
You arrange your documents at the Belgian embassy there in Hong Kong, and your future wife arranges all her documents at the Thai embassy in Hong Kong.
These documents will be required to deliver the affidavit.
After that you can normally get married in Hong Kong under Hong Kong law.

In all cases you will have to have the documents legalized at the embassy, which of course means extra waiting time in Hong Kong. The only direct advantage I see is that you may be able to do without translation because the documents in Hong Kong are also in English.
As a Dutchman myself, I had my Thai marriage registered very easily in my hometown, I had to wait 3 months for an investigation into a "marriage of convenience". Registration in the Netherlands was necessary with us in view of the registration of my son's birth in Thailand, and the establishment in another European country.
In addition, we have also registered the documents of marriage and birth in The Hague, so that you always immediately have a worldwide accepted birth certificate and marriage registration document. My son will probably need the first one later, and then I don't have to go to Thailand to pick one up, the second is necessary, for example, if you want to settle in Spain with your wife: that is one of the countries that only accepts a European document although formally they should).
For Belgium the rules will not be much different!
You will have to meet the requirements of HK for this wedding and then request all kinds of documents for both partners, have them legalized and of course take them with you.
You will find that getting married in Thailand is by far the easiest
