Reader question: Bringing a dog to Thailand?
Dear readers,
I would like to bring my dog from the Netherlands to Thailand. Dog weighs 9 kg.
Does anybody have experience with this? Cost? How is this all going?
Many thanks & regards,
Paul
At first I assume that you want to settle in Thailand. Taking a dog to Thailand for a holiday is madness, because of the costs and you don't do the animal any favors with two long flights, climate difference and perhaps difficult customs clearance on your return.
I myself took my English Stafford to Thailand 10 years ago. Flew from Dusseldorf with a daughter of Lufthansa first to Berlin and then to Bangkok. Had to incur a lot of costs in the Netherlands, such as Rabiesch test, special loft for the flight, stamp here and stamp there and everywhere decent docks.
In Thailand spent more than 3 hours at the animal emigration, that man thought my Steffordje was a pit bull and they are not allowed in. Furthermore, I was one stamp short, but by God's grace I was allowed through.
Customs held her hand for 2000 thb and finally we were in , I had her here for a few more years , turned nine, but succumbed to insect bites, which transmitted diseases.
So you can do it, take into account considerable costs, do not know what the plane ticket for a dog costs today, a lot of time-consuming preparation time to get everything in order, return is almost impossible, in Thailand still rabies, so you come difficult to re-enter the Netherlands. Success with it..

Dear Paul, we have no experience with a dog, but we do have a rabbit. In the Netherlands you have to visit at least various authorities. And of course you have to arrange it in advance with the airline. About 10 years ago it cost 90 euros (one way) and for that the rabbit was allowed into the cabin, but of course it didn't get a seat (although more or less coincidentally there was a seat next to us free). Your dog is of course not allowed in the passenger area and it will cost significantly more than the 90 euros in our case.
Also consider a possible domestic flight as a follow-up. That must of course also be arranged.
Our rabbit has grown very old here despite the heat.
We have taken our butterfly dog to Thailand twice a year (so 2 flights a year). It is absolutely not madness, a dog experiences a flight just like us. What Dirk writes about the costs in the Netherlands is correct. sitting, we had that every time. Three hours is "normal" here. Returning to the Netherlands is no problem at all if your dog has a vaccination against rabies. That costs between 4 and 30 euros in the Netherlands, 50 euros in Thailand! ticket costs for a dog are approximately 2 euros for a single journey. You do not have to pay anything at customs in Thailand if you travel with a Thai woman who speaks well. Otherwise, the costs are approximately 250 bath. Good luck! Our dog came every time in excellent condition in Thailand, but then needed a sanitary stop
!!!
I have been taking a dog to Thailand for 10 years.
With KLM you pay 400 euros there and back.
You must contact the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority in Utrecht.

Good luck Keith
Dear Paul/Mark,
If you can afford it and don't mind any hassle,,,DO IT…………!!!
Would choose KLM .... best animal transporter in the world, 100 years of experience !!!
Good luck,
carl.
