Home » Reader question » Reader question: How do I get a SIM card for WiFi at the airport in Bangkok?
Dear readers,
I will be going to Thailand from December 2 to December 15. These days I like to use WiFi to find my way, for example. I read on the internet that there are special Thai Sim cards available at Bangkok airport.
I just don't understand how these sim cards work? For example, is there already WiFi or is it unlimited? I also don't know where I can pick up the SIM card at the airport?
Help! I can't do it all.
Greetings,
Anouchka
You can't miss the sellers / boots and you can ask all your questions there
On a prepaid SIM you can buy an unlimited data package for 2 weeks for no more than 200 thb, more speed is more expensive
That's right, don't miss these shops. They even place the SIM card for you and adjust some settings in your phone so that it all works right away!
As soon as you pass through customs immediately left. I usually have AIS.
You choose a package depending on how long you stay and how you use it. I think I paid 600 Bath last week for 30 days and 7.5 GB.
IMPORTANT!!
Don't forget to set the English language on your phone.
I cycle right through Thailand and always reach.
Hotels usually have free WIFI
Have fun
I would not advise using Hotel or restaurant or the same WIFI with the same permanent passwords.
That's a piece of cake for hackers
ever heard of VPN?
Who knows what the best network is, and what does unlimited calling and data cost at the airport for a month?
Simply put, you have 2 ways to connect to the internet with a mobile device: 1) via the GSM network: in Thailand you preferably do this with a Thai SIM card, because of the relatively low costs compared to using your European SIM; or 2) via WiFi, where you actually do not use/need the GSM network at all. And that's the beauty, with WiFi you have 'free' internet. There are very few places where you have to pay for WiFi. So the tip is: use WiFi as much as possible, for example by planning and viewing the route in your hotel. In many places along the way you can also use this option at restaurants or cafes, large shopping centers and airports. No (free) WiFi available? Then use your internet connection via the GSM network, so that it takes a long(er) time before your data bundle is used up.
WiFi in hotels and other public places is usually of substandard quality so that you still switch to your data, so buy a SIM with a lot of data and little calling credit (which you hardly use anyway).
All major providers are present in all major shopping malls, True - Dtac and Ais are the largest. Choose one of the 3 that has the most interesting package on offer for you, they will place the SIM and install it all.
Sander, when I'm on holiday in Thailand, for example, I use (free) WiFi to read my newspaper, view my messages (Thailand blog) via Outlook, explore a route, look up addresses of restaurants, etcetera. However, I open my banking apps from ING, ABN and Transferwise via the GSM network, partly because banks warn against using free WiFi.
Don't bother looking for free WiFi. Just buy a Thai SIM from AIS or True with unlimited data. Goes very well and more than fast enough. These shops can be found everywhere at the exit of the airport and the staff will arrange everything for you. Prices depending on the promotion between THB 300 and THB 800 for 1 month
Hi, At Suvernambhumi airport you will see a D-TAC stand next to the baggage belt for your suitcase. And a little further on you will see two more stands from other suppliers, AIS and TRUE, etc. I have been using D-TAC for a few years now. So far I have had excellent internet everywhere throughout Thailand. Fast and unlimited. If you're quick, your Thai SIM card will already be in your phone before you even take your suitcase off the conveyor belt. I always choose the fastest package. 30 GB was last at Don Mueang cost me 599 Baht. It's not a difficult process either. Just give your cell phone to one of those ladies. They have lightning fast fingers. The SIM will be in place in no time and she will have stuck your old SIM to your cardboard case with a sticker. She enters something to test whether it works and voila Bob's your uncle. Create a WiFi spot for your laptop and you can enjoy the internet everywhere. Also had no problems at all on most islands. I wouldn't be dependent on the WiFi of hotels and coffee shops. I always find that so sad. A friend of mine always does that too. Between those tents, I can never WhatsApp him. Whenever we go out to eat somewhere, he always has to ask for those WiFi codes. A lot of hassle. Moreover, a hotel's Wi-Fi is often out and you share your connection with other guests. So your YouTube video freezes again. Do yourself a favor and get a SIM card at the airport straight away. You'll have a lot of fun with that. Have you run out of credit? No problem either. You can upgrade at all 7-11 supermarkets. Just give the phone to those people who work there and they will set it up for you. They are that cool. Have fun!
Make sure you remove your own SIM card from your phone.
This way you avoid high bills from your own provider when you return home
turn off roaming and you're done
