Dear readers,

I'm Arnoud and I've just moved to Bangkok with my Thai wife. I am in the process of obtaining a visa extension for 1 year that I have to renew every year.

I am a furniture maker/interior designer myself and would like to know if there are other Dutch people who practice this profession? And how do they get a job, knowing that you also need a work permit and that it is often given by the larger companies?

I would like to work as a furniture maker or as a teacher of furniture making or give workshops, I myself have 11 years of experience plus internal training of trainees.

Hope to hear from you!

Regards,

Arnoud

Don't think you can work with that in Thailand. Here's a list of what you can't do...https://thailawyers.com/jobs-prohibited-to-foreigners/

May be a prohibited profession for foreigners, although that decision ultimately depends on the MOL (Ministry of Labour)

The only way to get started in Thailand is to apply for a job at a (larger) company and arrange a work permit and related residence permit through them. Aren't you a bit late in organizing your visa, work permit and job? Have you been looking for opportunities to work as a furniture maker in Thailand from the Netherlands? How old are you? From the age of 50 you can apply for a residence based on retirement. Gives some peace of mind when looking around for other options. By the way: everyone has to extend their stay every year, regardless of the type of visa.

Well, here are all 39 professions that you are not allowed to practice in Thailand as a foreigner.

It is best to search on the website of the Thai labor department. I think this is a protected profession / Only for Thai.

As a teacher, it might be doable.

I estimate that as a furniture teacher you should be able to speak Thai as well as read and write.
In general, this also applies to a paid job, unless you find an international company with colleagues who speak English.

A work permit is issued by a government agency and applied for by a company with sufficient Thai employees.

Or: start a company and employ at least 5 Thais.

If married to a Thai only 2 employees needed

      Dear Bob,
The work permit is only issued by the Ministry of Employment.
And as a foreigner you have to apply for it yourself (you have to sign the application yourself) because the company does not do it for you, but can help you, such as filling in the necessary papers and accompanying you to the office of the Ministry. My employer hasn't done that for 10 years, so I always have to do it myself and alone.

    Dear Arnold,

As the above say, it won't be easy.

You can search on the GLASDOOR website, there are many vacancies for foreigners.

Hopefully you are over 50 years old, because then you can apply for a retirement visa.
If you're younger, it doesn't stand a chance I'm afraid.

People with a visa based on retirement will never get a work permit anyway, because after all, they are in Thailand to celebrate their retirement, not to come and work.

Ikea, just outside Bangkok, is always looking for European employees from the furniture industry, it's worth a try.
