Dear readers,

If a foreigner is married to a Filipino in Thailand, can he get a divorce there if it comes to a divorce, or is that only possible in the country where the foreigner comes from?

I also hear it's a nightmare to get a divorce in the Philippines?

Anyone experience in this?

Fernand

The Philippines and Vatican City are the only states in the world where you can legally NOT get a divorce.

In my opinion you can get a divorce in Thailand since you are officially married in Thailand and then Thai law is also important. However, I am not sure, it is best to check the Thai legislation or inquire at your embassy and also that of the Philippines.

I myself have been married to a Filipino for 34 years, and indeed if married in the Philippines, a divorce is impossible. There they only know an alnulment (nullification) which would cost you a lot of money and time.
Since I understand you are married to your Filipino in Thailand, it should be a lot easier there according to the information below.

Hopefully you can find the necessary information here.

I am also officially and traditionally married to a Filipina.
Cornelis and Piet provide the correct information about divorce.

However, the question is. Have official papers been requested that have also been legalized from the Philippines?
Otherwise you are officially NOT married at all for Filipino standards!!!
