Dear readers,

Soon to Thailand. From Bangkok by train, but it seems that there are no train rides to book from Bangkok to the south.

Does anybody have experience with this?

Regards,

Lydia

As far as I know and have done, you can go from Hua Lampong Bangkok train station with the night train sleeper to Hat Yai in southern Thailand. The journey goes through Hua Hin…

Please note that the Hua Lampong station in Bankok is closing/at least this was announced by a senior gentleman from the transportation authorities or something like that in order to earn money from the now high price of goods in the center.
So future journeys by train will probably start at the new Bang Sue station (from the center towards the north, about halfway between Don Muang airport.
Too bad, there was already an earlier article here on the site that was about the upcoming or now closed Hua Lampong (Bankok CS).

I departed from Hua lamphong to sisaket on Feb 5 and arrived back at Hua lamphong last Friday, so afraid Sue apparently not fully open yet

There are also plenty of buses, from the new Sai Thai, far west in BKK. Much faster and to many more places directly.
As I have read, there are works for a while (also not unknown to NS in NL) and because it is largely very thin single track, that means that there is a piece in between. Somewhere on the west side of BKK, partly because of the new RedLine/skytrain running above it.
This means that part of the already meager train offer has been canceled and another part only departs from another station.
But how far ahead are you asking? In practice you always get a ticket for the same day, except around the Songkran exodus.
You have to look at specific train hobbyist forums and then be able to read Thai reasonably well.

Yes, no problems at all going south by train. You could even take the train to Singapore. I myself once went to Malaysia at the border you have to leave and after border control you then continue with another train.

If you want to arrange some things in advance... because for long journeys and night trains you have to buy tickets in advance, especially during busy periods they are already sold out in advance... a friend of mine took care of his transport, such as trips over large distances. distances during his travels together with his ticket and first overnight stay via BMair in Maarsen, but also in Bankok because at the time they also had an office in a hotel in Bangkok, where a nice Mr. Ab turned out to be very helpful.
They still have an internet site I see.
Of course they won't be waiting to just sell train tickets.. maybe book something here and there.. and otherwise explore there themselves.

But of course you can go south by train. I can recommend the night train sleeping cabin 2nd class when you travel to at least Chumpon. Aircon is way too cold and less cozy. Take a downstairs bed so you can look outside when you want. I can regularly buy food and drink on the train. Alcohol is not officially available, but a beer in your bag may not stand out.
There are often delays, especially on southbound trains. However, the departure from Bangkok is reliable. It is therefore better to take the bus northwards. I like to go south with Thai railways in the manner described. Good trip.

Grab a tuk tuk or walk to the station. Buy a train ticket and try to get a lower bed. I did both a night train to Chang mai and the day train to the south. Both remain a topic of conversation for a long time at birthday parties, for example. We hope to make the train trip to Chang mai again next year. Have fun and enjoy everything

I had the same problem, leaving Feb 3 but from Surat Thani. You have to book from bang Bamru in bkk, I arrived there then and transported to hua lamphong by bus.
