Dear readers,

Soon I will be retired (Belgian) and would like to go to Thailand annually for periods of 3 to 6 months.

How can you best find a household help there to clean, cook, wash ... How much do you have to pay as wages? Are there official obligations if you use someone as a domestic help?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Hugo

Depends where you are going to live Hugo. When you come to a condominium, everything is generally offered there. But cooking???? It's different in the countryside, but I don't think you go there alone. It will become a tourist destination. If it becomes Pattaya / Jomtien I can help you with everything, including living space: [email protected]

In Bangkok, the wages of a live-in housekeeper (Mae Ban) are approximately 12 Baht per month, including board and lodging. Usually these are Burmese girls. They have 000 day off per week. They must apply for a Workpermit and also undergo a medical examination,
These girls are therefore officially employed and are in order with social security. So they enjoy free healthcare in a private hospital.

Good domestic staff are very difficult to find in Bangkok, they are very much appreciated and are part of the family.

I can only testify to what I see with friends and relatives who employ domestic servants.

I don't know how things are going in the outlying provinces.

I know how things are going in the outer provinces, because I live in an outer province (Chumphon) and have had a “Mae job” for a few years now. Not easy actually and you don't find a good reliable Mae job in a few days. There are too many things involved and it depends on your own family situation: single, with your own wife, with children ... A Mae job is usually live-in and has its own living space in the house or a cottage on the property. Remuneration is usually around 10.000THB/m with all further costs such as accommodation, water, electricity, food….
Cleaning and washing is no problem, but cooking ... yes, if you want to eat Thai food every day, because they can't cook European food of course.
The questioner provides far too little information to give him a proper answer. The only thing is: for “three months or for 6 months” where? … A temporary Mae Baan will be much more difficult to find in the countryside than a permanent one. Then you are better off with a maintenance lady who comes to clean for a few hours a day or week and takes the laundry home or takes it to the laundry. They are very easy to find. And as far as cooking is concerned: if you have to rely on a Thai person to cook, you might as well go to the market every day and buy your bag of rice, vegetables and meat... ready-made.
In the touristic places, there is no problem at all… in a condo or resort, all of that is usually provided: cleaning service, laundry, even restaurant…. in this case also depends on what you want to pay for this comfort. Stay with or without these services has a different price.
Of course, a lot also depends on whether or not you have your own experience with living in Thailand.

Forgot to mention there are agencies for that. But mostly it goes through the ubiquitous and extensive network that every Thai has.

Dear Hugo, first concentrate on which part of Thailand you want to live in. Are you looking for sun, sea and entertainment in Pattaya, etc. or for example a quiet life in Isaan. (where I live) in Isaan life is a bit cheaper than in the tourist corner. a reliable household help (live-in or not) is easy to find here. make a mutual agreement during this period. In Isaan you have little to no official obligations. it's just a trust towards each other. it is and remains Thailand. you can arrange a lot yourself here. good luck with your choice and welcome to Thailand

    Yes Hugo,

First find out where you want to live.

Outside of Bangkok there is a lot of help, they open the door and several people, from handsome to very ugly, come in.

Things are getting more difficult in Bangkok, although things are still going well in the northern suburbs (lLak-Si, Don Muang and Rangsit). But watch out; they are mostly single females and expect lodging.

    Greetings Nico
    from Laksi

Hugo you might like to have a helper with whom you can communicate in your own language.
    Then you can contact

3 to months, that's not a permanent job for a housekeeper.

My suggestion is, don't hire a Thai. Often lazy, unruly and NO English. I have much better experiences with burmese and cambodians (also cheaper).
As far as cooking is concerned: rice every day, with a (very) hot snack if the cook has to do it, and you probably pay way too much for it. It is better to cook yourself, do your shopping yourself at a large chain such as Tesco or Macro, and go out for dinner. If you outsource the market etc. it will cost you double.

    Thanks everyone for the comments.
I would go with my wife and we love Thai food 🙂
Where is not determined at all but probably a less touristy place on the coast with long beaches or near Chang Mai.

    Dear Hugo,

do you mean Chiang Mai because I don't know Chang Mai? Here you will not find long beaches in the entire province, which is not small because Chiang Mai is even the second largest city in Thailand, because, as far as my modest knowledge of Thailand is, it is not even by the sea. And, you and your wife love Thai food…. fine, me too, but have you been eating this for months on end and then as a Belgian, known as “Burgundians” when it comes to food ….
